Bush will have no honeymoon, say Democrats
By Ben Fenton in Washington

News - Bush-Cheney Transition Foundation

SENIOR Democrats said yesterday that they would not allow George W Bush a
political honeymoon and that their attacks would begin the day after the new
president's inauguration on January 21.

Terry McAuliffe, a close ally of President Clinton and the favourite to
become chairman of the Democratic Party's national committee, said: "We'll be
coming out firing. Let George W Bush have . . . a good inauguration, but we
need to give these Republicans the same honeymoon they gave us - none."

Gene Sperling, the chief economic adviser in the White House, attacked the
President-elect for remarks he made on Wednesday when appointing Paul
O'Neill, the chairman of the aluminium firm Alcoa, as his Treasury Secretary.
Mr Bush gave warning of a possible slowdown in the economy and said that this
was all the more reason for his $1.3 trillion (871 billion) tax cut plan to
be passed by Congress.

Mr Sperling broke with protocol to accuse Mr Bush of "talking down the
economy for short-term political gain". Mr Sperling said: "A new
administration should bend over backwards to look beyond political advantage
and reassure everyone it will be responsible. I think that's a serious
mistake for him."

But Dick Cheney, the Vice President-elect, said he and Mr Bush had been
careful to be accurate. He repeated that there were signs of a slowdown in
what has been a booming economy. Mr Bush formally resigned as governor of
Texas yesterday in an emotional ceremony during which he was close to tears.

He told a combined session of the state's Congress containing both Democrats
and Republicans: "I'm proud of the good we've done together in Texas, and I'm
looking forward to the good we will do together in America." Later, he met
centrist Democrats to discuss education.
Mr Bush is thought to be considering appointing the Rev Fred Flake, a former
Democratic congressman, as his education secretary, although there are
rumblings of dissent from his Republican Party over the move. If Mr Flake is
not appointed, it is hard to see how Mr Bush will be able to fulfil his
desire to appoint a Democrat to his 14-member Cabinet as a public sign of
reconciliation with his opponents after the bitter election battle.

Although many Democrats were happy with the appointment of Mr O'Neill, who is
widely respected by politicians and trade unionists, they say this is not the
same as having one of their own in the cabinet.
