He may be a flake, but he puts his money where his mouth is. True, the
much lauded $1billion gift was structured so that Ted will probably make
money on it (smart guy with smart accountants), but at least he stepped
up to the plate. I think the U.S. is very stupid for acting the way it
is regarding the U.N. We are far past the point where we can stand alone
in the world. The U.S. has shown what kind of 'friend' it can be to too
many people. Right now the U.S. is like the rich uncle that no one
likes, but all are nice to because he has a lot of money/power. But many
of the relatives are gaining wealth and the need to put up with the BS
from the uncle, and indeed patience with the uncle's perfidity and
intransigence, is wearing thin.
Watch what happens in Columbia, and the rest of South America
over the next few years. We are stepping in deep shit with 'Plan
Columbia', and it is bound to blow up in our faces. Never has a
government of the U.S. made so transparant a move without the backing of
the people. 'Plan Columbia' has multiple layers of wrong thinking
incorporated in it. First, the whole War On Drugs is as failed a
proposition as Prohibition was. Second, using the War On Drugs as a
cover, we are stepping into another Viet Nam situation where we are
trying to prop up a despotic government we helped create to enrich U.S.
business (primarily big oil) interests in the region. Third, is using
'Plan Columbia' as cover for enriching/enhancing the Military/Industrial
complex. Very little cash is going to Columbia, only enough to pay off
the right people. The bulk of the aide is in MILITARY hardware, and
guess who is going to profit; yup Sikorsky, Bell and other defence
contractors. Fourth is that the world knows the U.S. has no business
telling anyone how to run their internal affairs. The U.N. would never
sanction this incursion, and may yet issue a strong rebuke for our
interference.
