Clinton Will Get Offices in D.C., N.Y. When Term Is Up

President Clinton has to give up the Oval Office in four weeks,
but the federal government will ease the transition by giving him
two offices in exchange, White House officials said yesterday.
For six months after Jan. 20, Clinton will have an office in New
York City and another here in the townhouses at Jackson Place on
Lafayette Square.

Under the Presidential Transition Act, according to White House
spokeswoman Nanda Chitre, the General Services Administration has
money to fund two offices for ex-presidents for six months.
After six months, ex-presidents are assured a government-paid
office � just one � for the rest of their lives under the Former
Presidents Act. That office will remain in New York, which first
lady Hillary Rodham Clinton will soon represent in the U.S.
Senate.
The president also intends to keep privately funded office space
at his presidential library that he hopes to build on the banks
of the Arkansas River in Little Rock.
White House spokesman Jake Siewert said yesterday that the
Washington office will be "much more of a clerical operation than
anything else" and that Clinton will spend far more time at his
New York place, where he is "looking at some options" for space.
Hillary Clinton has been house-hunting in expensive neighborhoods
here for a place when she and the former president are in town.
But Siewert dispatched with speculation that Clinton might be the
first president in modern times to simply drive across town after
the inauguration of his successor, rather than flying aboard the
Air Force jet on which he is entitled one last flight (even
though the plane will not be designated "Air Force One," because
it will not be carrying a president).
"No," said Siewert, "we're leaving. We're leaving."
Where to? "I don't know," he said at yesterday's White House
press briefing. "We'll try to sort that out. We've actually had a
little discussion about that, but we haven't made a final
decision."
Hillary Clinton's recently signed $8 million book deal makes her
the family's main breadwinner for now, but the government will
also be contributing to her husband's post-presidential finances.
Under federal law, the White House said, ex-presidents get a
salary equal to what Cabinet members are paid � currently
$157,000.
