Perhaps not 'conspiracy' per se, but I DO have an interesting bit of gossip about Mr.
Robards...
I worked at a major mortgage bank, in the mortgage department, in Bridgeport in the
70s...Jason Robards
applied for a mortgage, and his mortgage folder came across my desk (as did the
mortgage folders of quite a
few famous and infamous folk who make Connecticut their home)...
So I curiously took a quick perusal through the folder...interesting bits of
information can be gleaned from
these folders (such as the fact that an actress, very big in the 1960s and early 70s,
was as much of a ditz as
her on-screen personas, and paid more attention to her dozens of cats than in her
financial matters)...
Anyway...Mr. Robards was no ditz when it came to his finances. Turns out that he had
been married a couple of
times, and each of the ex-wives were granted alimony based on his annual income. He
didn't want to pay it, so
he incorporated himself, with himself as president of Jason Robards, Inc., and his
lawyer as treasurer. As
president of the corporation, Mr. Robards had unlimited drawing power on the treasury
of Jason Robards, Inc.
As an individual, Mr. Robards had a fairly paltry annual salary. But Jason Robards,
Inc., DID make a
substantial income via the acting duties of Jason Robards, the individual, which as a
corporate entity was
beyond the reach of the ex-wives.
It was all spelled out there in the folder...as an individual, he could have never
gotten a mortgage with the
bank due to his paltry earnings as an individual. But as president of a corporation
making big bucks, and
having unlimited drawing power upon those funds, he was considered an optimal mortgage
customer, and so was
granted the mortgage... ;-)
