-Caveat Lector- http://www.nypost.com/postopinion/opedcolumnists/18922.htm MEDIA WATCH: THE FOURTH ESTATE CRIES VETO!' Wednesday, December 27,2000 SOUND the alarm! The battle to bork Attorney General-designate John Ashcroft is on - and the mainstream media already are pitching in with their best shots to kill the nomination. Nearly all the coverage of Ashcroft's selection by President-elect George W. Bush stressed his opposition to abortion - but none as misleadingly as did The New York Times last Friday. As Ira Stoll of smartertimes.com notes, the Times ran a quote from Ashcroft, under the heading "On Abortion," that was lifted from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch of April 30, 1999. In it, he decries "this gruesome procedure" and says that Congress and a majority of Americans want it eliminated. But the original story makes clear that Ashcroft was referring specifically to partial-birth abortion - a procedure that a majority of Americans do indeed oppose, as does the American Medical Association. The line came from a speech in the Senate, in which Ashcroft added: "I realize, however, that not everyone agrees with my view of abortion. Indeed, I recognize that the American people remain deeply divided on the issue. But where there is common ground, we need to move forward and protect life." Needless to say, none of those inclusive remarks were quoted by the Times. Why? In fact, asks Stoll, why did the Times quote the remarks from the Post-Dispatch - which itself was quoting a full speech available on numerous electronic databases? As for the TV networks, anchors and reporters were marching full steam ahead to depict Ashcroft - whom they had widely praised for his dignified refusal to contest his re-election defeat by the late Mel Carnahan - as the sidekick of Attila the Hun. "Anti-abortion groups and the self-described Religious Right could not be happier," declared CBS's Dan Rather. He then tossed the story to John Roberts, who labelled Ashcroft "the darling of the Republican right" and allowed opponents to declare, without rebuttal, that the nomination was "an insult to every American." ABC's Mike Von Fremd warned that this "controversial" nomination "troubles most Democratic constituencies," then ran back-to-back interviews with Democratic interest-group officials, who called Ashcroft "one of the most divisive he could have chosen." All that was missing was a talking head shaking his head in sorrow and intoning, "That's not the kind of man Al Gore would have chosen." ================================================================= Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh, YHVH, TZEVAOT FROM THE DESK OF: *Michael Spitzer* <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Best Way To Destroy Enemies Is To Change Them To Friends ================================================================= <A HREF="http://www.ctrl.org/">www.ctrl.org</A> DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
