> Just as there is "junk science" and "junk law" there is also "junk
research." One type of "junk research" is what I think of as "Kevin Bacon
research."
Most of you are familiar with the game of "Kevin Bacon" but I will very
briefly explain for those who may not be. The pretext of the game is that
any contrmporary film star of any significance can be connected to Kevin
Bacon is five moves or fewer. In other words, the film star may not have
actualy been in a film with Kevin Bacon but will have been in a film with
someone who was and if not, thta person will have been in a film with
someone who was and so on up to five times removed from qctually starring in
a film with Bacon. But the connection is always there.
This is the way many people research. It especialy lends itself to someone
striving to obtain a predetermined result--their "Kevin Bacon." This is
also how things like the McCarthy hearings ALWAYS found a communist
connection in their investigations.
Given enough moves, virtually anything can be connected, anything and
anybody. It can connect a current US President to a defunct and defeated
European political party of fifty years ago with all sorts of non-existent
implications. It can find a communist behind every bush or a government
agent.
To aid all those who really love this "connection" method of research and
think it "proves" something, here is a little tool to help you out in making
wild and meaningless "connections."
