-Caveat Lector- <http://www.irna.com/newshtm/eng/08125100.htm> hr 003 Iran-Russia-Sergeyev /POL/ Sergeyev: Russia to forge long-term cooperation with Iran Tehran, Dec 28, IRNA -- Russian President Vladimir Putin's diplomacy gives a special status to independent states and expansion of ties with them and because of this, Russia is pursuing long-term cooperation with Iran, announced the visiting Russian Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev here Wednesday evening. In a meeting with the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Hassan Rowhani, the visiting Russian minister said that Russia is unilaterally and formally withdrawing from the 1995 Gore-Chernomydrin agreement which bans military cooperation between Iran and Russia. Sergeyev stressed that no country outside the region should intervene in settlement of the issues concerning regional states because it would be threat to regional stability and security. He said political understanding and cooperation at highest level would serve as a basis for cooperation in the economic, security and military fields. Rowhani said that Iran welcomes Russian Government's new policies on expansion of cooperation with the independent states. Russia's new foreign policy is deserving of a powerful country like Russia, he said. The top SNSC official said that mutual interests, especially security and stability in the region, serve as the basis for bilateral cooperation. The Caspian Sea, said Rowhani, should remain non-military as well as the sea of peace and stability, without intervention of countries outside the region. He further called on Russia to adopt due policies to find a political solution to the problems in northern Caucasus, especially Chechnya. He said that Iran is ready to contribute to the issues. Rowhani said Muslim nations of the region expect Russia to play more active role in the developments in the Middle East and support its `traditional friends'. He said support for the oppressed Palestinian nation is the human duty of all countries.
