-Caveat Lector-
>What a sad, dismal life to have nothing to believe in.
Everybody believes in something. I believe in doubt. I keep track of how
many times I believe something and it turns out later it was the right
thing to do. I also keep track of how many times I doubt something and
it turns out later that was the right thing to do. I compare the two.
Doubt wins hands down.
The desire to believe is part of our basic human nature. It saves us
from having to think for ourselves. But when we do think for ourselves,
we are far more likely to arrive at the truth. This is work, often hard
work, and sometimes very unpleasant. The truth is pretty scary
sometimes. And, yes, sometimes it is sad and dismal. But it is what it
is and must be dealt with as such. The alternative is delusion. Clinging
to delusions, especially to willful self delusions, is an anti-survival
strategy. This world can be a truly nasty place sometimes. Sometimes the
nastiest parts appear on the surface to be nothing but sweetness and
light. Don't believe it. Look beneath the surface. Not every sheepskin
holds a sheep.
