Clinton Seeking Cool Million in Speaker's Bonus
President Clinton is seeking a million dollar signing bonus as
part of a contract now being negotiated with a Washington, D.C.
agency that handles speaking engagements for ex-politicos,
reports the web site Inside.com.
"According to a source with knowledge of the negotiations,
Clinton may receive a $1 million signing bonus from the
Washington Speakers Bureau before he eats his first nubbin of
rubber chicken as a private citizen."
The mega-bonus is said to be unusual. While hefty incentives are
not unheard of, they usually range no higher than the low six
figures.
Only eleven years ago, critics of Ronald Reagan were livid when
he accepted a two-million dollar speaker's fee in Japan.
The lawyer handling negotiations for Clinton's unprecedented
signing bonus is said to be Robert Barnett, who also negotiated
Mrs. Clinton's $8 million book deal.
Barnett goes back with the Clintons to the earliest days of the
Whitewater scandal, when the first lady summoned him to the White
House to take possession of documents removed from the office of
deputy White House counsel Vince Foster after Foster's mysterious
gunshot death.
The president is also angling for a multi-million dollar book
deal for his own memoirs, though his last book was a commercial
flop.
The Clintons' mad scramble for cash is driven, no doubt, by the
recent purchases of multi-million-dollar homes in Washington,
D.C. and New York and still staggering legal bills which will
only get worse if, as expected, Mr. Clinton is indicted in the
coming weeks.
Another likely source of income is Mr. Clinton's billionaire
friend, James Riady. The Far Eastern Economic Review reported
last fall that Riady has invited Clinton to join the board of his
Lippo Group.
Riady, along with his father Mochtar, funneled millions of
dollars into both Clinton's presidential campaigns. Financial
details of Riady's post-presidential offer to Clinton remain
confidential.
