Simple enough. Does the name "Billy Dale" ring any bells with you? That's
the nice little man who handled the White House travel office for a number of
years and who had been investigated by two previous administrations who
thought his methods, particularly his keeping the office funds in his private
bank account rather questionable. They were wise enough not to dump him,
though, because the media to whom he gave many, many perks loved him, and it
wasn't until the Clintons, yokels from Arkansas, had the temerity to give
him the boot that the wrath of the media descended. Immediately and
continuously the media savaged every moment and facet of the Clinton
presidency. The Republicans who hated the Clintons long before he was even
elected to office (Remember Rush talking about Chelsea as the White House
dog, since she was so ugly. This discussion took place before Clinton was
elected, and I think Chelsea was about twelve, possibly thirteen.) With the
help of the media, particularly the press, the Republicans deluged the
Clintons (one and all) with every possible poisonous comment they could
muster. They could barely restrain themselves when Hillary's father died.
They really wanted to say vicious, ugly things and it hurt them to keep it
in long enough for her to return to the White House. Among other things,
every two-bit journalist could be sure there would be a lucrative opportunity
if he or she was willing to speak or write scathingly of Bill Clinton. It
was the key to journalistic success. I recall listening to Fred Barnes once
early on. I wanted to write him a letter about one of his comments. The
library had nothing--no one had ever heard of him. But he was very
anti-Clinton, and suddenly he was all over the place and made editor of his
own magazine. Slam Clinton and succeed beyond your wildest dreams. But as
to your question--no, I can't think of any reason why the Clinton White House
was antagonistic towards the press.
