By Larry Chin January 6, 2000 | Like most (if not all) of the people intelligent enough to continue fighting the Bushistas, I have spend the past several days calling on congressional Democrats to challenge the election and oppose all George W. Bush cabinet appointments. Not once have my urgent pleas received more than the polite "Thank you. I'll pass it on." I did not even hear interest nor enthusiasm from the offices of "progressive" senators such as Barbara Boxer and Paul Wellstone. Judging from the lovefest we saw between the parties yesterday, the Democrats do appear to have reduced themselves to simpering, obedient political lap dogs for the Republicans to kick around. Senator Diane Feinstein even spoke of "a renewed warmth and bipartisanship". Excuse me? Gephardt mumbled about "meeting our friends across the aisle halfway". What the hell is he talking about? It is nothing short of sickening that in the wake of the dirtiest election in American history, after an absolute rape of democracy, that these people we depend on for representation (these people who were directly targeted and spat on by the Bushes) are doing nothing and saying nothing -- at a moment in history that screams for someone, anyone, to speak the truth. Are the Democrats "positioning themselves for a better opportunity?" If that is the strategy, they are horribly misguided. The time to act is now. Are they afraid for their political lives? Obviously. Are they perhaps afraid for their lives in a literal sense? Given the Bush's penchant for hiring thugs, likely. Nevertheless, isn't sacrifice what politics supposed to be about? I am hoping today, someone will surprise us by showing some "huevos" and look Bush in the eye and say, "I oppose everything you stand for." Short of that, the fight is ours---and ours alone.
