Strobe Talbott to Head New Globalization Initiative

In a move to strengthen its standing as an international leader
for higher education, Yale has announced that Strobe Talbott '68,
Deputy Secretary of State and a key architect of U.S. foreign
policy, will direct the new Yale Center for the Study of
Globalization. The University will also create a new fellowship
program for emerging leaders of other countries, plus three new
chairs in international studies.

Talbott, a former trustee of the University, will begin work in
July 2001 as director of the new Center and as professor of
international relations.

"I'm coming home to a community that has always upheld the
highest intellectual standards while actively engaging in the
affairs of the world," said Talbott. "That tradition makes Yale a
natural leader in the quest to understand, explain, and shape the
forces that are changing our lives and defining our era."

Promoting Global Scholarship

The Center for the Study of Globalization will encourage
research, writing, and teaching on globalization, drawing on Yale
faculty and visiting scholars and practitioners of international
affairs. The Center will also engage in "Track II diplomacy,"
privately sponsored efforts to promote dialogue between opposing
sides in crises and disputes. The new program is funded in part
by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.

The Center for the Study of Globalization, as well as the
fellowship program, will be housed in Yale's newly renovated
Davies Mansion.

Innovate Program for Leaders

To extend Yale's mission of educating leaders, the World Fellows
Program will engage promising young leaders from around the world
in a semester of study focused on global problems. Participants
will come from government, law, and business, as well as academe,
religious bodies, and non-governmental organizations.

The executive director of the program will be Brooke Shearer,
currently conducting international programs for the U.S. National
Park Service. Daniel C. Esty, Deputy Dean of the School of
Forestry & Environmental Studies, will be faculty supervisor.

Interdisciplinary Perspectives

To support Yale's expanded commitment to international students
and programs, President Richard C. Levin announced three new
senior professorships in international studies. Yale already has
established the first; Levin will seek donor support to endow the
remaining two.

The University allocated the positions to the Yale Center for
International and Area Studies, which will seek scholars whose
interests span at least two of Yales academic departments or
professional schools.

"The solutions to many of our most important global problems
require knowledge that spans two or more disciplines, yet
academic departments tend to favor specialists," Levin said.
