U.S. Temperatures in November-December Coldest Ever
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States experienced its coldest
November and December on record last year, posting a
bone-chilling average national temperature of only 33.8 degrees
Fahrenheit, the government said on Friday.
The near-freezing two-month reading broke a record that had stood
for over 100 years -- a 34.2 F mark set in 1898, according to the
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) National
Climatic Data Center.
The record smashing came on the back of a November that was the
second-coldest on record and a December that was the
seventh-coldest.
``Two months in a row of much below average temperatures resulted
in the coldest November-December U.S. temperature on record,''
NOAA said.
Three states -- Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri -- faced their
coldest November-December on record, the agency said.
Snow accompanied the low temperatures in many places. Marquette,
Michigan, saw a record 89.5 inches of snow in December, topping
the 82.6 inches that fell in 1981.
And more cold weather may be in store. ``The eastern and western
United States will experience additional cold outbreaks at least
through March with periods of moderation in between,'' said Jack
Kelly, head of the National Weather Service.
The cold spell came at the end of a year that began with the
warmest winter on record for the United States and continued warm
through October, NOAA said. Preliminary data indicated last year
was the 13th warmest on record, averaging 1.2 degrees F above the
long-term average of 52.8 degrees F.
