Chavez flap is one more
sign of Bushies’ arrogance
By Paul Begala
MSNBC CONTRIBUTOR
exerpts:
When Attorney General-designate Zoe Baird was being pilloried for failing
to pay Social Security taxes on an illegal immigrant she’d hired as a nanny,
Linda Chavez was one of the loudest voices in the hypocrites’ choir. “I
think most of the American people were upset during the Zoe Baird nomination
that she’d hired an illegal alien. That was what upset them more than the
fact that she did not pay Social Security taxes,” Chavez told PBS in 1993,
according to the Post.
As they never tire of telling us, the Bushies don’t have extramarital
affairs. They save their lies for public affairs.
And Chavez was far from alone. During the Baird case, and all the
way through impeachment, Republicans argued for a strict, unforgiving reading
of the law, invoking in pompous, pious tones, “The Rule of Law.” Let’s see
the same people who argued for Bill Clinton because he was reluctant to admit
an affair turn around and argue for leniency in the Chavez case.

also:
THEY LIE: I know that sounds harsh, but what else do you call it? The New
York Times reports that Bush spokesman Tucker Eskew “said Ms. Chavez was
unaware of the woman’s legal status at the time she was sheltering her and
only realized after she had departed from her home that she was here
illegally.” But that’s not what the woman in question says. Marta Mercado
told The Washington Post that she informed Chavez of her illegal status about
three months after moving into her home. And Chavez’s close friend, Abigail
Thernstrom, told the Times, “I’m pretty confident that Linda did know” that
Mercado was not legally in this country.

I found a site with a decent-sized archive of Linda Chavez's essays.

To Ken S. --- if you'll only listen
NOT SINCE THE FIRST CHRISTIAN faced the lions in the Roman Coliseum has one
man entered so dangerous an arena as Kenneth Starr does when he appears
before the House Judiciary Committee Thursday. So here's my advice, Judge
Starr, based on my own experience having served on the Judiciary Committee
staff during the Nixon impeachment inquiry and having testified before the
committee numerous times.

Time for blacks to rebel
The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a liberal national
group, estimates that at least 10 times as much money will be spent to turn
out a large black vote this year as was spent in the past couple of
elections. But if this money is used to frighten and misinform black voters,
is this really advancing the civil rights of African Americans? Or is it just
one more cynical attempt to scare them into voting against Republican
candidates?

Now this is an interesting tidbit:

exerpt
On the NPR show, Roger Clegg, an attorney with the right-leaning and the
slightly misnamed Center for Equal Opportunity (Linda Chavez' think tank),
made the argument that felons shouldn't be allowed to vote. "If you aren't
willing to play by the rules, then you shouldn't have a say in making the
rules," Clegg said. "And people who have been convicted of felonies, which
are by definition serious crimes, shouldn't be given a role in deciding how
the government should be run," Clegg said.
After hearing this, we called up Clegg to ask what he thought about banning
corporate criminals -- like BASF and Hoffman LaRoche, who had engaged in
perhaps the most egregious criminal antitrust conspiracy in history -- from
"deciding how the government should be run." (Corporations of course don't
vote, but they do give money to elect candidates, they lobby legislators and
law enforcement officials, and they mold public opinion through their public
relations efforts.)
Gone was Clegg's unwavering absolutism. After much humming and hawing, Clegg
admitted that "it makes sense to limit the political role of corporations
when they have shown that they are not worthy of trust." But he quickly added
that "because individuals and corporations are fundamentally different, you
can't just apply the rules equally." Clegg questioned whether the First
Amendment would allow prosecutors to strip corporations of their "rights" to
influence how the government should be run. Clegg, of course, raised no such
question when it came to stripping individual felons of such "rights."
