PLOT TO BAN HOME-SCHOOLING! COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Federal officials within the U.S. Department of Education are engaged in a widespread conspiracy to ban home schooling, an advocacy group charges. The bureaucrats are worried that unless children are in schoolrooms and under their control, they won't be able to drum "acceptable" ideas into the kids' heads, according to the activists. "Do not be mistaken: Indoctrination is a central purpose of public schools," says Mrs. Elaine Chemell, chairman of American Parents in Support of Home Schooling, based in Colorado Springs. "Officials are afraid if children are taught by their own parents, they will fail to absorb notions the federal government has been pushing for decades, such as evolution. We might produce a generation of freethinking individualists who question government authority. "That's why this cabal of bureaucrats fiercely committed to a strong central government is secretly working to destroy home schooling." Home schooling, allowed in some form in every state, has been an American tradition since colonial times, especially in rural areas. With many parents concerned about violence in schools and upset about the teaching of controversial subjects such as sex education and acceptance of gays, millions of Americans are returning to the old practice. "It's becoming more popular than ever -- that's why the government is so concerned and worried," says Mrs. Chemell. Because of the immense popularity of home schooling among parents nationwide, bureaucrats who detest the concept have been force to use backdoor methods to undermine it. Among the steps, Mrs. Chemell says, has been an increase in paperwork parents must complete to be allowed to teach their children themselves. In some states, it's become so complicated and hard to follow that some moms and dads give up in frustration and forget the whole thing. Officials also want to stiffen the requirements for teaching at home. "Soon, unless you're a Harvard Ph.D. with access to a world-class library -- of 'approved' books -- you will never be allowed to teach your own children at home," the activist said. Sneaky officials have also been launching "studies" to find out how well home schooling works. The bureaucrats' plan, Mrs. Chemell charges, is to use such investigations to dig up a few anecdotal cases across the country in which home schooling has failed -- and use the results as ammunition. "They'll try to find a few households where home schooled kids can't read and they'll use that as an excuse to push for laws banning it nationwide," says Mrs. Chemell. Once home schooling is outlawed, severe legal steps will be taken to enforce the bans, she predicts. "Just as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms hunts down guns in the homes of citizens, federal agents from the Department of Education will be authorized to raid homes, seize 'unauthorized' books and teaching materials, drag children away and fine their parents." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- This material is copyright 2001 by the Weekly World News and may not be reproduced without the written approval of the Weekly World News. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
