-Caveat Lector-
BILL PASSES UP SECRET SERVICE $$
By RICHARD JOHNSON with PAULA FROELICH and CHRIS WILSON
The NYPOST
BILL and Hillary Clinton might seem money-hungry the way they are
making book deals and buying real estate, but they are saying no
to $1,100 a month they could be collecting from the Secret
Service.
The Clintons are not charging rent on their Chappaqua estate for
the space used to house the agents assigned to protect them.
"They are entitled to charge rent, but they have decided not to
do it," White House spokeswoman Nanda Chitre told PAGE SIX.
Alexander Cockburn, the British journalist whose ideology is
somewhere to the left of Mark Green, claimed last week in the New
York Press: "The Secret Service needs a place on the property to
house its agents, and the Clintons have been so good as to make
available a structure for the bodyguards. By an amazing
coincidence the rent matches the monthly mortgage payment for the
entire property."
Wrong. To buy the $1.7 million property, the Clintons got a
mortgage of $1.36 million over 30 years at 7.5 percent, which ace
mortgage broker John Estreich worked out for us as $9,509 per
month.
The Washington Post's Lloyd Grove - after interviewing Secret
Service spokesman Jim Mackin - reported the Clintons were
collecting just $1,100 a month, calculated on a federal formula.
Wrong again.
Presumably, other ex-presidents are subsidizing their retirements
by renting to Secret Service. But not the Clintons.
And if Clinton wants to avoid Monica Lewinsky, he should not rent
office space in Carnegie Hall Tower on West 57th Street, as has
been rumored.
Monica's mother, Marcia Lewis, and her stepfather, R. Peter
Strauss, live right around the corner, and Monica visits quite
often. Manhattan should be big enough to accommodate the former
lovers without the daily risk of them running into each other.
And Monica did move here first, relocating to the West Village in
October 1999, long before the Clintons arrived.
Meanwhile, on Thursday, the Media Research Center is having a
"funeral" for Clinton and his administration at the Monarch Hotel
in Washington, D.C. The "Master of Condolences" is L. Brent
Bozell, with Christopher Buckley and Jackie Mason listed as
eulogists. Matt Drudge and Ann Coulter, who is coming as
Drudge's date, are saying "a few words," and Lucianne Goldberg
heads up the "funeral committee."
Goldberg said they are really mourning "the oncoming boredom"
with no scandals.
