By all accounts, Ofir Rachum was a normal sixteen year old -
bright, curious, and internet-savvy. Using the technical wonders
of internet, Ofir surfed the waves of the world and in the
process met an �older woman� in her twenties, and began an online
correspondence. Ma�ariv newspaper reports that she introduced
herself as an American tourist. According to one of Ofir�s
friends, Shlomi, interviewed this afternoon on Kol Yisrael news,
the relationship led to a meeting in Jerusalem over a month and a
half ago. Again the details are still sketchy, but what is known
is that a couple of days ago Ofir and the woman rendezvoused at
the Jerusalem central bus station. She reportedly was going to
take Ofir to her home. Ofir got into her car and they took a
ride. It is unclear whether he knew their true destination.
Sometime later, between the Israeli community of Psagot and the
Arab-Palestinian Authority controlled city Ramallah, the car was
stopped by three masked men. The Arab terrorists fired into the
car, killing Ofir instantly. They dragged his body to the trunk
of the car and drove off. A little while later they dumped him,
leaving him to be discovered by P.A. �police,� who thought he
was an Arab youth.
It seems that Israeli security forces heard the shots that killed
Ofir, but did not interfere because they were fired on the border
between Israel and the PA. Believing that only Arabs were
involved, they suspected that the killing involved a �suspected
informer� or some other internal Arab affair. The next day,
after Ofir was reported missing, an officer put two and two
together and requests were sent to the PA, demanding
identification of the body discovered just over the border. Faxes
were sent back and forth, including descriptions of Ofir�s
clothing, and finally, his picture. When the identification
process was successfully concluded, Ofir�s bullet-riddled body
was returned to Israel for burial.
Voices have already been heard: what was Ofir Rachum doing with
an Arab woman? Why did he dare travel to Ramallah? When
interviewed by Kol Yisrael, the commander of Judea and Samaria,
General Benny Ganz, put his foot down at the very tone of the
questions. He made it very clear: Even if an Israeli finds
himself in territory ruled by the PA, be it by accident or
intentionally, he should be able to return home safely and
soundly. Even if the border crossing was intentional and the
traveler in error, this is not a reason for him to be killed.
Also interviewed this morning was Justice Minister Yossi Beilin,
who was asked whether, following such a brutal murder, the second
this week, the �peace process� should continue. Beilin responded
emotionally, saying that the only way to stop such killings is
the successful completion of the �peace talks.� �I remember when
we could go shopping and eat in restaurants in Ramallah, and I
wait for the day when we will be able to do so again.�
Earlier this week left-wing columnist Ari Shavit, wrote in
Ha�aretz newspaper: �The profound crisis which is causing the
failure of all the Israeli prime ministers, bar none, was created
by two crucial decisions, taken in 1992 and 1993�The second
decision was produced and directed by Justice Minister Yossi
Beilin,�who had Israel sign an illusory document [the Oslo
Accords] which undermines the foundations of its
existence�(which) shattered Israel�s national security,�placed it
in a position of endemic lack of strategic stabiliy,�and turned
it into an indefensible one (state)�No one is capable of
defending the country after Beilin entrusted its security to the
hands of the enemy.�
Exactly four years ago this week, Israel signed and implemented
the accursed Hebron Accords, a direct result of the original Oslo
Accords. At that time, when meeting with Hebron leaders, then
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu decried criticism against him:
�Why don�t you give this a chance? Wait and see how everything
will be OK. You may only criticize me afterwards, if the plan
fails.�
On the morning of the cabinet vote, then minister Natan Sharansky
again visited Hebron to see with his own two eyes the impending
results of the Hebron Accords. Sharansky was no new-comer to
Hebron. He had been here numerous times and was well aware of the
facts. However, he wanted to see it again. We took him from site
to site, from neighborhood to neighborhood and pointed out the
dangers inherent in the accords. We showed him the hills
surrounding us, hills he himself had previously stood on, and
warned that terrorists would shoot at us from them. We showed him
the unbelievably close proximity between the PA-controlled areas
and the Jewish neighborhoods, and warned of attacks. Etc. Etc.
Etc.
Natan Sharansky returned to Jerusalem, sat with Netanyahu, and
repeated our concerns. The Prime Minister calmed Sharansky,
telling him, �Natan, don�t worry. The Hebron residents will have
full security. I will not leave them without security.� Believing
Netanyahu�s promises, Sharansky voted to accept and implement the
Hebron Accords.
During Netanyahu�s meeting with Hebron leaders, Mrs. Orit Struk
said to Netanyahu, �I want you to look in my eyes and tell me
that we will be safe in Hebron. What will you do when they shoot
at us from the hills you are giving Arafat?� Netanyahu�s
response, �If they shoot at you from those hills, I will send in
the tanks.�
Of course, we didn�t believe him but had no recourse. The Accords
were confirmed and implemented. And all our warnings came true,
as if we were prophets looking into a crystal ball.
In a couple of weeks, Israelis will again enter the voting
booths. According to the polls, Sharon is going to wipe the
floor with Barak. But that is not enough. It is just the
beginning. Sharon�s job entails annihilation of the remaining
shreds of Oslo, effectively convincing the Israeli public that
Oslo is nothing more than a code word for Israeli�s destruction.
Sixteen year old Ofir Rachum fell through a trap door and was
left dangling, a victim of the innocence of peace. That same
innocence has cost the lives of hundreds of Israelis since 1993.
Ariel Sharon must dispel the innocence, dismantle the scaffold
and reconstruct it on the other side of the border. Then he must
start hanging those who deserve to be hanged.
