Bad News for Labor's Dinosaurs
"The percentage of American workers belonging to unions fell last year to
13.5 percent, its lowest point in six decades."
- New York Times News Service, 1/21/01

Coyote Ugly
"If the current face of the Republican party is dreary, the face of the
Democratic party is just plain ugly: ranters crying fraud in Florida but
ignoring rampant irregularities in Democratic districts in big cities
elsewhere; media flacks calling for counting every vote but overlooking
massively uncounted absentee ballots (in states where the outcome was not in
question) so that Gore's popular-vote margin remains inflated; and now the
emergence of Sen. Hillary Clinton as the most grandiose exponent of
limousine liberalism in decades.
"After her election to the Senate last fall, Hillary had a golden
opportunity to shed her bad press and recreate herself -- to surprise her
critics and win back disillusioned admirers (like me). Instead she went
wholehog down Marie Antoinette Boulevard by angling for an inflated book
contract and spinning off on a shopping spree for yet another mansion. The
Clintons, forever schmoozing with the rich and famous, are fake populists
with distorted values."
- Feminist columnist Camille Paglia

What Enviro-Wackos Have Wrought on Left Coast
"California is famous for starting American fads. Surfing. Hula Hoops. Cool
custom cars. High taxes. Herpes. Now, California is about to start a new
'thing.' Ten years ago, in a blissful attempt to commune with Mother Earth,
California outlawed new power plants. No more burning that icky fossil fuel
and stuff. Those tree-chopping, coal-belching, ozone-depleting,
Bambi-killing, money-grubbing industrialists were brought to their knees!
Hooray!
"Then came seven million more people. And Silicon Valley. And an economic
revolution. Since 1990, California power usage has doubled. So, where does
more power come from? Good question. There's no more nukes. No more coal. No
more oil and no more gas. Unfortunately, there's also no more electric.
California now faces massive rate increases and third-world electric
blackouts. Cowabunga!"
- Tom Adkins, "The Common Conservative," 1/15/01

Property Rights Resurrected With Bush Win
"With a few exceptions, the majority of the American public has accepted the
fact that the election is over and George W. Bush will be our 43rd president
with his own ideas, principles and agenda for the country, and while some on
the Left are calling his agenda 'extreme', the only 'extreme' thing about it
is that it is extremely opposite of the views of his predecessor, Bill
Clinton. Bush's nominees for the various cabinet posts reflect that.
Unlike Clinton, Bush is pro-private property and his nominee for Interior
Secretary, Gale Norton, shares many of his views on that subject, most
notably, that people, not government, should control land and property
owners should have the right to build and develop their land freely without
Big Brother regulating their every move. Perhaps the result will be that we
will see the rescinding of Executive Orders that usurped local control over
land."
- Lisa Dean, Free Congress Foundation, 1/16/01

Conservative Success Formula
Steve Moore is the chief honcho at the Club for Growth, an "organization of
Reagan Republicans concerned about economic growth and frustrated with the
drive toward big government in both parties today." According to Steve ...
and this is a line I definitely intend to steal for the Republican Liberty
Caucus ... the CFG is committed not to just electing *more* Republicans, but
also *better* Republicans. Amen.
Anyway, CFG raised a cool $2.5 million for true conservative candidates last
year and racked up a pretty impressive win record for an organization in its
first real year of operation. They won 10 of the 16 races they got involved
in ... and had liberal Republicans like Rep. Marge Roukema of New Jersey
howling mad. My kind of people.
CFG held a pre-inaugural conference last Friday morning at the Dirksen
Senate Office Building to showcase a half-dozen of the successfully-backed
House candidates. These gentleman are rising stars in the
limited-government movement, so you might want to keep an eye on them:
Jeff Flake of Arizona
Ric Keller of Florida
Mike Pence of Indiana
Paul Ryan of Wisconsin
Rob Simmons of Connecticut
Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.
You might also want to consider joining the Club for Growth. Not only do
they think like us philosophically ... but they've proven they have a
winning formula for targeting and selecting winnable candidates and races.

Race-Baiting Backlash Simmering
"Telling the truth about race relations in America is the 'third rail' of
politics and journalism. One gets the impression a 'search and destroy'
gang of very liberal, demon-Democrats will find you, demonize you, and try
to ruin your life and career if you use a word some black person somewhere
might find offensive. Because of these semantic landmines, white leaders
are afraid of saying anything, no matter how warranted or fair, so they keep
silent. Black leaders are not afraid of saying anything, no matter how
irrational or vile, so they say it. And as the unchecked demagoguery of
Jesses Jackson and Rep. Maxine Waters, California Democrat, becomes more
inflammatory and offensive, the suppressed resentment of whites nears the
boiling points."
- Columnist Linda Bowles, Washington Times, 1/19/01
