JACKSON'S STOCK DROPPING ON WALL ST. LIKE A FAILED DOT-COM

Tuesday,January 23,2001
By ROD DREHER

IT TOOK only three days for Jesse Jackson to be "healed" and to
return to public life. A miracle? Heck, no! After all, the man
has a lucrative franchise to protect.

But he may need divine intervention to keep Jesse Inc. afloat in
the wake of his sex scandal. Informed sources from the financial
world, as well as a former top Jackson insider, are saying that
Jackson's high-flying dalliance with corporate America is in
trouble.

Why? Jesse's handling of the mess with Karin Stanford, the mother
of his love child, is severely tarnishing Jackson's image among
business leaders, and causing black leaders to keep him at arm's
length.

While he was supposed to be taking time off to "heal," sources
say Jackson phoned supporters in an attempt to orchestrate a
"spontaneous" uprising of support. He was to be disappointed.

Disgust with Jackson's behavior is also giving white-shoe
financial types who have long felt taken advantage of in their
dealings with Jackson an excuse for cutting him loose.

"Members of the New York Stock Exchange are outraged," said one
knowledgeable source. "They didn't want to have his [Thursday
night] fund-raiser on the floor in the first place - and they
have to pay for the whole thing."

"The emperor has no clothes," said an African-American financial
macher. "If you think [the Wall Street Project] is going to be
here next year, you're crazy. They're going to run from him like
the plague."

Worse for Jackson's future, insiders speculate that journalists
and possibly government investigators will feel emboldened to
follow the Jesse Inc. money trail.

They suggest the findings - Jackson's monetary relationship with
California supermarket magnate Ron Burkle is said to be
particularly interesting - will be tremendously unflattering to
Jackson and many who have become financially involved with him.

The knowledgeable source, an ex-Jackson intimate, was a supporter
of the Wall Street Project - until he began to see it as a
shakedown operation designed not to help black people, but to
enrich Jesse Jackson.

This source knows Stanford, Jackson's mistress and the mother of
his baby, and feels she was preyed upon by Jackson.

"He was her mentor, her minister, her counselor and her employer.
He was everything to her, and he shouldn't have taken advantage
of her," the source said angrily.

Outraged former Jackson supporters said the civil-rights leader's
benefactors should be asking where his girlfriend got the money
to buy her new six-figure Los Angeles home, and her luxury car.

The answer, one source said, could well be found in the records
of Rainbow/Push Coalition's nonprofit Citizenship Education Fund,
which claims to provide civic instruction to the poor and
disadvantaged.

But it is Jackson's alleged infidelity to the interests of black
America that really riles the sources I spoke with yesterday, who
would only talk if their names weren't used.

"Jesse came to Wall Street with some great ideas and principles,"
said a black former supporter. "Along the way, Jesse found greed,
and found that it was easier to make money on a transactional
basis.

"He is lowering the veil of ignorance on the economic progress of
black America."

The ex-coalition insider said that when he was involved with the
organization, he began to worry that the kind of "extortionist"
operations Jackson was carrying out against corporations could
violate RICO statutes.

"I consulted with several lawyers," he told me. "They all said
the same thing: if you even have to ask the question, get out."
