CORRECTED: Man Gets Through Security, Shakes Bush's Hand
(Corrects first paragraph to read ``shook hands'' instead of ''shook heads'')
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A man without proper clearance walked through
security checkpoints during the presidential inauguration and shook hands
with newly sworn-in President George W. Bush (news - web sites), the
White House said on Wednesday.
The unarmed man, who was not identified, was the same person who
performed a similar act during Bill Clinton's second inauguration in 1997.
He got through security despite the fact that guards were on the lookout for
him in case he tried his prank again.
``He has done this before. And the president was never in any type of risk
at all. And we have full faith and confidence in the Secret Service: They do
their job, they do it professionally, they do it well,'' said White House
spokesman Ari Fleischer.
Fleischer said the man had a pass for the standing-room- only area for
inauguration spectators outside the Capitol last Saturday, and went through
at least one metal detector.
The Washington Post said the man somehow made it into a VIP section
and then into the Capitol. Shortly after Bush was sworn in as president, and
while proceeding to a lunch in the Capitol, the man shook Bush's hand.
Fleischer said the man also handed Bush a coin of some sort.
``It happens all the time on the campaign trail, people hand you little
mementos like that,'' Fleischer told reporters.
He said the matter was being reviewed as to how the man got into the
area.
Television news footage showed the balding man walk up confidently to
Bush outside the Capitol and chat to him, unimpeded by security staff.
In July 1998, a man using a nearby entrance to the Capitol stormed past a
metal detector with a gun and opened fire in the corridors of the building,
killing two police officers.
