-Caveat Lector- Rita Dallas was Old Joe Kennedy's nurse in the last years of his life. She wrote a book about her experience, "The Kennedy Case" (1973). A Kennedy cousin, Ann Gargan, volunteered for the task of overseeing Old Joe's care after his stroke. Her decisions regarding his treatment, as "the family member in charge," were almost unanimously to Joe's detriment. When the Kennedy children would complain, Rose would silence them by suggesting if they wished to give up their careers to devote their lives to securing Joe's care, then they were free to do that. So Joe didn't get the physical therapy and speech therapy, etc., that would have greatly enhanced his dignity and independence. Woven into this sad and frustrating Ann Gargan dysfunction was an odd story about her brother (Joe, I think) and his relationship with Ted. Joe Kennedy hand-picked Joe Gargan as a suitable companion for Ted growing up. But there was always an imbalance of power, as if Gargan were the lesser of the two in the family's eyes and knew it. He was a companion but also in a subservient role - at least in Old Joe's eyes. He and Ted were very close. Rita says that so much of Ted's spirit was just plain dead after Mary Joe's death. But in addition to his deep depression, was an odd change in the dynamic of Gargan's approach to the family and his position therein. Where before Gargan would always approach the Kennedy clan by waiting for a nod of approval before entering a room, immediately after the crash, he acted as if he owned the place. Suddenly, he sloughed-off his subservient pose and dominated his surroundings, especially dominating Ted. I got the impression that Ted's spirit was broken in part due to an intense and unexpected betrayal. I don't know much about Joe Gargan, but I do know that some things changed drastically where he was concerned immediately after Chappaquiddick. Ms. Dallas' book is excellent, by the way. I don't remember ever reading an account about any family where a father was so deeply loved and so highly regarded by his children.
