Sidney Blumenthal Tells It Like It Was

Just as we suspected, former presidential assistant Sidney
Blumenthal was running the government. Perhaps even the world.

That's our inescapable conclusion after reading his book proposal
for "The Clinton Wars," the unwritten White House memoir for
which Farrar Straus & Giroux is paying an impressive $650,000
advance, with plans to publish sometime next year.

"The Clinton Wars will present the untold story behind the
actions and policies of the presidency from my perspective as a
close adviser and confidant to both President Clinton and First
Lady Hillary Clinton," Blumenthal writes in the proposal, which
we managed to obtain this morning. "During my tenure as Assistant
to the President, from 1997 to 2001, I have had consistent and
unique access. My personal knowledge and information from this
time has been exclusively reserved for this book and almost every
page will recount a previously unknown anecdote."

Blumenthal, who writes that he has known the Clintons since his
stint in the 1980s as a national reporter for The Washington Post
and eventually formed "a confidential relationship" with them,
describes his book as "a first-hand account from the inside of
the Clinton White House by one who was at the center of the
conflicts, politics, scandals, and successes of the presidency."
The breadth of his narrative ranges from "inside Air Force One to
the sealed Senate impeachment hearing room to Kosovar refugee
camps," he writes, and includes "my dramatic conversation with
the First Lady that was the subject of Ken Starr's suit to the
Supreme Court over executive privilege, but which, once he won,
his prosecutors forgot to ask me about before the Grand Jury."

Predictably, the author will recount "the strange process of
demonization that also came to be centered on me" and apparently
plans to settle scores with such figures named in his proposal as
Matt Drudge, Christopher Hitchens, Tim Russert, Newt Gingrich,
Chris Matthews, Tom DeLay, Sally Quinn and George Will. And he
intends to show "that the First Lady's statement about a 'vast
right-wing conspiracy' was not an exaggeration." Blumenthal
writes: "The book will detail how I learned about the
subterranean multi-million dollar dirty tricks campaign against
the President through a friendship with disillusioned right-wing
hitman, David Brock." Other highlights:

* "I will discuss Elie Wiesel's moral influence, Tony Blair's
firmness, Madeleine Albright's toughness, and what really
happened in the sudden firing of General Wesley Clark."

* "I will tell the inside story of the Clinton-Blair
relationship. . . . I will explain how I came to first introduce
Bill Clinton to Tony Blair before he became Prime Minister and
then to serve as the President's liaison in this special
relationship."

* "The Clinton Wars will encompass the political campaigns of
2000, both Hillary's and Al Gore's, in which I played major roles
every day. . . . I will discuss my involvement with the Vice
President during the administration on such issues as global
warming and race as well as my political counsel to him and his
team during the primaries and the general election campaign."

Blumenthal stirringly concludes his proposal: "I intend to write
a book that will serve as a central and essential reference for
all historians of the future."

Hey, Sid, when you get around to it, can you comp us an
autographed copy?
