-Caveat Lector-
The new senator from NY, first partner to the leader of
the most ethical administration in the history of the country,
has expressed her views regarding John Ashcroft, as described
in exerpts from a news story of Jan 29, 2001:
Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Democrat
of New York, also said today that she
would vote against the nomination.
Mrs. Clinton, in announcing that she would vote against Mr. Ashcroft,
said,
"His record and his views placed him on the distant shores
of American
jurisprudence."
Members of several groups that have opposed Mr. Ashcroft accompanied
Mrs. Clinton today in Manhattan as she announced her
decision to vote
against him and Gale A. Norton, the interior secretary
nominee.
Mrs. Clinton said she feared that Mr. Ashcroft would deepen the
divisions
that already existed in the country over emotion-laden
issues like abortion and
civil rights. She also expressed doubts about whether he
could set aside his
personal beliefs and carry out the responsibilities that
come with being the
nation's top law enforcement officer.
"His record demonstrates a long and personal struggle to
bend the rule of law
to fit his views," Mrs. Clinton said. "Senator Ashcroft is
not the right man to
help President Bush build a single nation of justice, for
his view of justice,
were it the law of the land, would divide Americans even
more sharply."
Does the comment about "personal struggle to bend the rule of law
to fit his views," ring any kind of bell?
