Ex-president's first speaking fee: $100K

By Bill Nichols
USA TODAY

WASHINGTON Bill Clinton's vacation is over in record time.
Just two weeks after leaving the White House, the former
president will give his first paid speech Monday in Boca Raton,
Fla., to a Morgan Stanley Dean Witter convention. His fee: about
$100,000.

Aides say Clinton also plans to give his first post-presidential
interview today to Israel's television Channel 2 from his
home in Chappaqua, N.Y. Spokesman Jake Siewert said Clinton
agreed to talk to the station as part of a series on the Middle
East peace process.

Questions are sure to arise in Israel about the timing of the
interview and whether Clinton is attempting to boost the chances
of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Polls show Barak badly
trailing hard-line candidate Ariel Sharon in next Tuesday's
election.

Clinton, who plans to spend all of next week in south Florida,
also will give a speech Feb. 10 on the Middle East at a
synagogue in Miami. Aides said they weren't sure whether Clinton
will be paid for that speech. A spokeswoman for the synagogue
declined comment.

Aides say Clinton turned down a more lucrative offer, a $2
million deal to appear in a Super Bowl commercial last Sunday.
Clinton staffers wouldn't say whom the offer was from. Aides say
Clinton also passed on a request to appear on a prime-time
edition of NBC's Saturday Night Live.

Previous presidents have also cashed in. Ronald Reagan received
$2 million in 1989 for two 20-minute speeches and some public
appearances in Japan.

"This is not out of line," American University presidential
historian Allan Lichtman said of Clinton's speaking schedule.
"This is America. Everything is for sale."

Previous presidents, however, have waited a bit longer before
launching their speaking careers.

Former president George Bush gave his first paid speech on May
24, 1993, four months after leaving office. Reagan didn't start
making paid speeches until March 1989, two months after he left
office .

Clinton's speeches come after a two-week barrage of bad publicity
for him and his wife, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y. :

The last-minute pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich, whose
former wife is a big Democratic fundraiser.

The Clintons' acceptance of $190,000 in gifts just before they
left the White House.

Clinton's rental of prime Manhattan office space at a cost to
taxpayers of about $700,000 a year.
