Gephardt asks Bush to re-nominate White

WASHINGTON, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A top Democrat asked President
George W. Bush Friday to re-nominate Judge Ronnie White to the
federal bench following questions about his 1999 Senate
rejection, raised during recent confirmation hearings for
Attorney General John Ashcroft.
Missouri Rep. Richard Gephardt, the ranking Democrat in the
House, sent a letter to Bush that said the re-nomination of White
would "heal the wounds" opened during Ashcroft's bruising
confirmation battle.
Ashcroft was confirmed Thursday 58 to 42 by the Senate in a
bitter battle over his conservative positions on many issues.
As a Senator, Ashcroft led the fight to reject White's
nomination to the federal bench by then-President Bill Clinton
because he claimed that White was pro-criminal and anti-death
penalty as a Missouri judge. After the Senate rejected White in
October 1999, and Ashcroft was nominated to lead the Justice
Department, critics charged that Ashcroft distorted White's
record as a jurist.
In January, White testified before the Senate Judiciary
Committee and said that Ashcroft had made false claims about his
record in an effort to sink his nomination for political and
personal reasons.
Missouri Democrat Rep. William Clay Jr. joined Gephardt in
sending the letter to Bush. In a meeting with Bush earlier this
week, members of the Congressional Black Caucus also asked that
White be re-nominated.
White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer said Friday that the
request had been received by the president and that no decision
has been made.
