Duh
"I fully understand why you are upset that former President Clinton spoke at
one of our conferences. We clearly made a mistake. ... We should have
thought twice before the speaking invitation was extended. Our failure to
do so was particularly unfortunate in light of Mr. Clinton's actions in
leaving the White House. ... We should have been far more sensitive to the
strong feelings of our clients over Mr. Clinton's personal behavior as
president."
- Morgan Stanley Dean Witter Larry Moe & Curly chairman Philip Purcell in an
e-mail mea culpa to angry customers who objected to the company's decision
to pay former president Bill Clinton $100,000-150,000 to speak at a
corporate conference in Florida last week

Proportional Outrage
"I love liberals. They put up with this guy (Clinton) through perjury,
suborning perjury, obstruction of justice [and] use of the military to cloud
discussion of his problems. [Then] he steals the toaster and they say,
'That's it, we've had it.'"
- George Will on ABC's "This Week," 2/11/01

His Party's Own Worst Enemy
"While Republicans are aglow that George W. Bush continues to outperform
'expert' predictions, they also find comfort in itching their Clinton scab.
They just can't resist railing against the man they love to hate. They
should. During inaugural festivities, I ran into Newt Gingrich. About
Clinton's never-ending farewell speeches, Gingrich shook his head and said,
'Republicans have it all backward. Every time Clinton opens his mouth in
public, we should silently cheer!'
"With a mischievous grin he elaborated that Clinton should be seen as a 'big
oak tree' with branches so thick and wide they cast shadows on all of the
seeds trying to sprout below. Without sunlight, these seeds wither and die.
The seeds are the new Democrats, who must grow into the political sunlight
and be noticed if Democrats are to take back Congress in 2002 and the White
House in 2004. ... Today it's clearer than ever that this 'master
politician's' skills are akin to those of an extraordinary athlete who makes
great individual plays, but doesn't help his team very much."
- Columnist Laura Ingraham, USA Today, 2/12/01

Armageddon Put On Hold
"Here it is mid-February and we're still waiting for the disaster Al Gore's
friends confidently predicted if George W. Bush prevailed in the Electoral
College. There's no rioting in the streets (the Rev. Jesse Jackson having
been busy changing diapers elsewhere). Small children have not been lashed
to their factory looms, barefoot feminists pregnant or not have not been
driven back to their kitchens (if any), the concentration camps for gays,
lesbians and blacks are still under construction (if not still on the
drawing boards), the new president is talking in dulcet tones to Democrats
and the loudest weeping and wailing is coming from the generals at the
Pentagon. The only visible threat to the nation's security on the eve of
St. Valentine's Day is the continuing crime wave out of Chappaqua, N.Y.,
that has overwhelmed law-enforcement agencies across the Atlantic seaboard."
- Wes Pruden, "Pruden on Politics," 2/13/01

Adults Back In Charge
"In little more than a week, everything at the White House -absolutely
everything - has changed. Out are the 20-something, denim-wearing, pony
tailed Clintonites known for strewing pizza boxes throughout the halls; the
perpetually late president who some media wags said never changed his watch
from Arkansas time; the 24-hour, seven-day-a-week news cycle that often saw
huge stories break on Friday nights after the evening network news aired.
"In are the 30- and 40-something, box-cut, scrubbed-clean,
suit-and-tie-wearing Bushies; the scrupulously punctual president who starts
his day just after 7 each morning; and a weekday 9-5 news cycle that ends
with an announcement over the speaker in the press office that the 'lid' is
on. 'There's a real sense of calmness about the White House now. The adults
have arrived,' noted Gary Aldrich, a former FBI agent who worked at the
White House in the early 1990s at the end of the Bush administration and the
beginning of the Clinton term."

"Acting" Gov Hits Huge Political Pot Hole
"Less than two weeks after being sworn in, Acting (New Jersey) Gov. Donald
T. DiFrancesco is already discovering how hot it can feel under the
spotlight. Even as he prepared to make the fullest public financial
disclosure of his 25-year career in politics, Mr. DiFrancesco today found
himself answering questions about a 1994 deal in which four close friends
bailed him out after he and his older brother defaulted on $1.2 million in
bank loans. Two of those friends are influential Republicans in their own
right and commissioners on state authorities, and one of those two, Anthony
J. Sartor, was later the beneficiary of a $3 million state subcontract as
part of the troubled overhaul of New Jersey's automobile emissions
inspection system.
" ... Mr. DiFrancesco's Republican opponent for governor, Mayor Bret D.
Schundler of Jersey City, said Mr. DiFrancesco should never have borrowed
money from Mr. Sartor. Bill Pascoe, Mr. Schundler's campaign manager, said,
'It displays bad judgment on Donnie's part, at least, to put himself in the
position where questions about a conflict of interest could be raised.'"
- New York Times, 2/13/01 (NOTE: The National Committee of the Republican
Liberty Caucus .. of which your editor serves as chairman ... endorsed
Schundler over DiFrancesco in a unanimous vote last week.)
