-Caveat Lector- Saturday February 17 10:21 PM ET Women Urged to Run for U.S. Presidency WASHINGTON (Reuters) - In a move timed to coincide with Monday's President's Day holiday, a new political group is urging Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and more than 100 other women governors, lawmakers and business leaders to consider a run for the White House in 2004. American Women Presidents, formed in March 2000 to fight for getting a woman elected U.S. president, said a woman candidate had a real chance of being elected in 2004 after years of mostly symbolic campaigns. ``Now women have the opportunity to run for the presidency and win!'' said the group's president, Mosemarie Boyd, in a press release issued on Saturday. ``And now is the time to start planning for a successful campaign in 2004.'' American Women Presidents drew headlines last August when it first offered former White House intern Monica Lewinsky a job as its corporate vice president and then withdrew the offer under pressure from various women's groups. Many women have run for the top U.S. political office, led in 1872 by Victoria Woodhull, the first woman to run for president, and including Sen. Margaret Chase Smith, a Maine Republican, who ran in 1964; Rep. Shirley Chisholm, a New York Democrat, in 1972; Rep. Patricia Schroeder, a Colorado Democrat, in 1988; and former Labor Secretary Elizabeth Dole in 2000. American Women Presidents lobbied hard in 2000 for the Republican and Democratic presidential candidates to select a female vice presidential candidate. It also endorsed and made financial contributions to all 11 Republican and Democratic women gubernatorial and U.S. Senate candidates in 2000. In a letter to the former first lady, the group urged now New York Sen. Clinton to reconsider her stated intention not to run for the White House in 2004. ``We hope you will reconsider this important decision and we look forward to working with you,'' the group said. The group also sent a letter to Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas, who has publicly discussed a possible presidential bid. ``We were very excited last year when you publicly stated your intention to run for the presidency and we look forward to working with you when you decide to begin your campaign,'' the group said. __________ EcoNews Service - Always online for Ecology, Consciousness & Universe Exopolitics.
