Peace at any cost is a Prelude to War!

FACTUAL ERRORS

* MacLeod misrepresents what land constituted the "original land of
Palestine." He writes: "They [Palestinians] acknowledged the Jewish
people's right to take 78% of the original land of Palestine, although
Arabs still consider it theirs. Naturally, says [Mohammed] Dahlan,
Palestinians expect to get back the full remaining 22%."

FACT: The Jews actually were allotted only 12% of the 'original
Palestine.' The original land of Palestine, as determined by the League of
Nations, includes what is now Israel, Gaza, the Judea, Samaria AND the
entire state of Jordan. In 1922, Britain disregarded its obligations under
the Palestine Mandate and took 80% of the land to create the Arab state of
Transjordan, with a majority Palestinian population and no Jews allowed.
The 1947 UN Partition Plan divided the remaining 20% of Palestine into two
states -- one Arab, one Jewish. The Jews got 59% of the land. So the Jews
were allotted 12% (59% of the 20% of the original Palestine) of the
original Palestine, not 78%. And 60% of this 12% is desert!

* About 1948, MacLeod writes: "To Palestinians, it is al-Naqba, the
Catastrophe, in which Jewish forces -- among them thousands of immigrants
facing persecution in Europe who had just pored into Palestine -- sent
800,000 Palestinians fleeing into Arab countries as refugees."

FACT: The number 800,000 is inflated. A report by the UN Mediator for
Palestine determined that the number of Palestinians who fled or where
driven out in 1948 is 472,000 [Progress Report of the United Nations
Mediator on Palestine, GA Official Records: Third Session, Supplement No.
11 (A\648), Paris, p. 47 and Supplement No. 11A (A\689, and A\689\Add.1,
p.5)]. In addition, Jewish forces "sent . . . Palestinians fleeing" in
only a few isolated cases, such as Lod and Ramle. By and large,
Palestinian Arabs fled at the behest of their own leaders who believed
that the Arab world would be victorious in liquidating the nascent Jewish
state.

Haled al Azm, the Syrian Prime Minister in 1948-49, acknowledged the Arab
leadership's responsibility in creating a mass Arab exodus from Mandate
Palestine: "Since 1948, we have been demanding the return of the refugees
to their homes. But we ourselves are the ones who encouraged them to
leave. Only a few months separated our call to them to leave and our
appeal to the United Nations to resolve on their return" ("The Memoirs of
Haled al Azm," p. 386-7).

* MacLeod speculates that Arafat grabbed a submachine gun from his
bodyguard because he was "unnerved" "about Sharon's coming to power." He
writes: "Maybe the coming of the old warrior [Ariel Sharon] is what
recently led a clearly unnerved Arafat to grab a machine gun from a
bodyguard and leap out of his car when Jewish settlers in Gaza blocked the
road."

FACT: TIME's chronology of events is totally off here -- Arafat pulled the
gun on Dec. 4, 2000. Yet, Sharon was not the Likud candidate for Prime
Minister until Dec. 18, 2000, when the Knesset voted against dissolving
itself and former Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu removed himself from the
race. Thus, on Dec. 4, when Arafat pulled the machine gun, Netanyahu --
not Sharon -- was the likely candidate for the top position.

:: KILLER IS DEFENDED BY MEDIA: Various media outlets tried to downplay
Palestinian responsibility for the heinous bus attack on February 14 which
killed eight Israelis. The front page of the LOS ANGELES TIMES carried an
ASSOCIATED PRESS photo which shows the damaged bus, and the Palestinian
terrorist still behind the wheel, laid back with a sad face. The caption
is as follows: "Palestinian bus driver Khalil abu Olbeh, 35, sits wounded
after leading police on a 19-mile chase. Family members said that he was
distraught over financial problem and upset by current unrest." The
GUARDIAN defended the bus driver as "a sort of Palestinian everyman who
finally snapped because of the combined pressure of the four-month
uprising and Israel's economic blockade." Despite the terrorist having
admitted to carefully planning the attack, the GUARDIAN said the attack
was "far from being the calculated aim of a dedicated terrorist," and
claimed that the killer was merely drowsy from medication. Peter Jennings,
anchor and producer of ABC World News Tonight, decided not to cover the
story at all. Perhaps this was a busy news day? Well, there was apparently
enough time for ABC to do several Valentine's Day features, including a
clip on a nude wedding and another on the reproduction of slime molds. But
no Middle East news.

The media also did their share on the coverage of the Israeli elections.
Christiane Amanpour, CNN's star correspondent, did her best not to hide
the animosity she felt toward Sharon and the Israeli "right-wing" [See the
article on our site at: <http://www.tzemach.org/fyi/docs/CNN-CAMERA.htm>].
Even before Sharon's victory, NPR reporters were busily portraying the
veteran Israeli leader as a bloodthirsty killer eager to plunge the Middle
East into flames. In consecutive January 24th segments of "All Things
Considered", reports by Jennifer Ludden and Kate Seeley characterized
Sharon as a "war criminal," as the "butcher of Beirut," as a man possessed
by an "obsession with force," and as one whom "many blame for helping
trigger the current spasm of violence." The day after winning the
election, Sharon visited the Western Wall and reverently touched the
ancient stones. The British GUARDIAN then ran a cartoon
<http://www.guardian.co.uk/israel/graphic/0,5543,435245,00.html> by Steve
Bell that obscenely depicted Sharon's bloody handprints on the Western
Wall. The cartoon desecrates the Western Wall and encroaches on brash
anti-Semitism. Another cartoon

was published in TIME MAGAZINE, showing Barak handing over to Sharon the
"dove of peace," which Sharon promptly torches in a barbecue. This cartoon
originally appeared in the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE.

:: BARAK QUITS ... AGAIN; PERES ACCEPTS: Current Prime Minister Ehud Barak
resigned from politics again Wednesday, refusing the position of defense
minister in Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon's cabinet. Immediately after
his crushing election defeat Feb. 6, Barak had announced that he was
resigning from politics. He reversed himself a few days later, accepting
Sharon's offer to become defense minister. That reversal prompted an
outrage in Labor and in the Israeli public.

Meanwhile, Regional Cooperation Minister Shimon Peres announced Saturday
that he intends to accept the Foreign Affairs portfolio and not the
defense minister's job, in Sharon's national-unity government. Talks on
forming a coalition made no progress over the weekend. Likud and Labor
representatives failed to meet to discuss portfolios, citing the need for
deliberations in Labor prior to deciding final demands." Peres said he
spoke to Sharon on Friday and told him he would reject his offer of the
Defense portfolio, because he believes that foreign affairs would be a
more proactive position at this stage in relations between Israel and the
Palestinians.
