The U.S. press corps seems to have learned nothing from Election Night. In
its latest rush to declare a final winner in Florida, a tally of
"undervotes" in Miami-Dade County -- showing George W. Bush clinging to a
140-vote lead -- has been transformed by the national news media into a
conclusion that Bush really did win Florida.

That isn't exactly what the Miami Herald said, especially since the
newspaper has nearly 50,000 more undervotes to tally in the rest of the
state -- and other Florida newspapers in those counties have uncovered
gains for Al Gore in both "undervotes" and so-called "overvotes."

The Miami Herald's point was that the Miami-Dade recount -- combined with
earlier South Florida recounts -- would not have put Gore in the lead. Who
really "won" Florida is still unclear. But the American press corps is
none too great with nuance these days. For the story about the news
