A 12-member committee of statisticians and demographers said yesterday that only unadjusted data should be released to the states. Acting Census Bureau Director William Barron agrees. In a letter to Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, Barron writes that "the Committee reached this recommendation because it is unable, based on the data and other information currently available, to conclude that the adjusted data are more accurate for use in redistricting." Uh oh. Bad news for the Social Democratic Party. The socialists wanted to use statistical sampling artificially inflate the numbers for their core constituency. It's widely believed that any adjustment to the census figures would increase the counts of minorities, renters, and city dwellers--all of whom tend to vote Democratic. Redistricting of congressional districts would have taken these undercounted people into consideration...and resulted in new congressional districts where Democrats have a distinct advantage. They'd have a prime opportunity to seize the majority in Congress in 2002 and retain that hold on power for at least the next ten years. But now the Census Bureau has pulled the plug on the Democrats. What will they do next?
