Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had not reached the airport when the incident happened, said his party spokesman, Suranan Vejjajiva. It was not known whether sabotage was suspected, he said. There were no passengers on board the special Thai Airways flight. Those injured were four crew members, who jumped off the plane following the explosion, Civil Aviation Department deputy chief Usat Borasutra said. Mr Suranan said the Boeing 737 was due to take Mr Thaksin to the northern resort town of Chiang Mai to attend a meeting. "His security men told me they heard a big bang and the plane caught fire before the Prime Minister arrived at the airport. We can't speculate on what the cause was," he said. Mr Thaksin did not change his schedule and flew to Chiang Mai in a military plane. The plane, parked at an aerobridge, was being fuelled when the blast occurred. The explosion triggered off a fire that was brought under control in about an hour. The aircraft was destroyed and only its tail remained intact.
