Back at the time of the quake that hit San Francisco
or Primeta,(during the world series telecast),
CNN had a report about research similar to yours.
They visited a couple of scientists who had bought a
farm near Pendleton Oregon. These guys had buried
miles of cable in the ground on this farm.
They were looking (and recording) signals coming
from the earth. They showed these signals on
an oscilloscope and the signals they had recorded
a few hours before the earthquake. The scientists
said the signals were definitely an early warning
prior to the quake.
Perhaps that research is still underway near
Pendleton.
Also....there was a report about some strange
signals being detected by the U.S. Navy just
prior to the San Francisco earthquake.
The Navy has (or had) a very sensitive
underwater electronic detection "fence" along
the coastal waters. They said this was a
submarine detection device. On TV there was
shown the trace record of an unusual signal
which this system had picked up. The needle making
the trace (graph recording), had gone completely
off the scale for about 30 minutes prior to the
quake. Then about 30 seconds before the quake,
the needle had dropped back into the "normal"
range.
