BURGER in Washington Daily News Staff Writers Federal prosecutors looking for evidence of a White House votes-for-clemency deal have subpoenaed the grand rabbi of a Hasidic sect in New Square, sources said yesterday. The feds want to speak with Grand Rabbi David Twersky and another man, New Square Deputy Mayor Izzy Spitzer, about a private meeting they had with both Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton in the White House after the election that made her a senator. Twersky said that in the Dec. 22 meeting, he pushed then-President Clinton to trim the jail sentences of four sect members convicted of stealing tens of millions of dollars from government anti-poverty programs. Clinton slashed their sentences on his last day in office. Although the First Lady attended the meeting, she has said repeatedly that she did not participate in the conversation regarding clemency. Sen. Clinton and New Square leaders also have insisted that they did not discuss clemency during an August meeting with Hasidic leaders in the Rockland County community. Investigators are trying to determine whether Sen. Clinton used her influence with her husband to exchange clemency for votes in her Senate campaign. Twersky endorsed Clinton after the August meeting, and the community then voted for her 1,400-to-12. Federal prosecutors have asked the reclusive Twersky to appear before a White Plains grand jury in the coming days, though a specific date has not yet been determined, said two sources familiar with the matter. Yesterday, a lawyer for the New Square community, Samuel Rosenthal, declined to comment. Herbert Haddad, a spokesman for Manhattan U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White, also declined to comment. White was one of about a dozen U.S. attorneys out of 92 nationwide who were notified by President Bush yesterday that they will be allowed to stay in office at least past June. Federal prosecutors are usually asked to resign promptly after a switch in presidencies. White and the others staying on were allowed to do so for a variety of reasons, including, in some cases, ongoing investigations. Justice Department spokeswoman Mindy Tucker said White was allowed to stay "indefinitely" because she is prosecuting a case against several lieutenants of terrorism kingpin Osama Bin Laden. Tucker said the decision to keep White on "was made prior to anything [that] happened with the pardons." Besides the New Square pardon, White is probing the pardon of fugitive billionaire Marc Rich and allegations that Bill Clinton's half-brother, Roger, may have tried to peddle his influence on clemency.
