FBI SEEKS TO QUIZ SILVER IN PARDONS

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said yesterday the FBI has
contacted him to talk about any link Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton
might have to the controversial New Square clemencies.
But Silver (D-Manhattan) said he doesn't know anything about an
alleged votes-for-clemency deal.
"No discussion took place as to a pardon - and nothing similar to
that," Silver said, referring to conversations at a pre-election
meeting he attended between Clinton and New Square leaders.
Manhattan U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White has been probing several of
Bill Clinton's last-minute pardons, including one to fugitive
billionaire Marc Rich that has sparked outrage.
White is investigating Bill Clinton's commutations of the
sentences of four Hasidic swindlers from New Square - and whether
their get-out-of-jail-early deals were linked to the village
voting 1,400 to 12 for Hillary Clinton over GOP candidate Rick
Lazio, who won in other Hasidic villages.
Agents already have interviewed some village leaders, but a date
has not been set for questioning Silver.
The New Square officials have denied any votes-for-clemency deal
was ever discussed.
Silver, an Orthodox Jew, escorted Hillary Clinton to New Square
last August, when she met with Grand Rabbi David Twersky, among
others.
In December, Twersky and Deputy Mayor Izzy Spitzer met with
then-President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton at the White
House and raised the issue of clemency for the four men, who were
in jail for stealing $40 million in federal grants, including
some for education.
Hillary sat in on the meeting, but said she played no role in her
husband's decision to reduce the sentences of the cons.
Meanwhile, Anti-Defamation League Director Abraham Foxman said he
now regrets his role in lobbying former President Clinton for the
Rich pardon.
The prominent Jewish leader said Rich's generosity to charities
compelled him to write a supportive letter to the president.
Rich went on the lam for 18 years after being indicted for
evading $48 million in taxes and trading with the enemy, charges
erased by the pardon.
"On further reflection, as this unique case unfolded, I began to
question whether a person's good deeds should overshadow other
aspects of his behavior. In hindsight, this case should not have
had my involvement," Foxman said in a statement.
