REPRESSION STUDY BACKS FREUD
One of the most controversial areas of psychology is whether it's
really possible to repress memories. Some psychologists argue
that it is, and that children often repress memories of physical
or sexual abuse. Researchers have found new evidence supporting
the idea, which was first put forth by Freud.
Michael C. Anderson and Collin Green of the University of Oregon
in Eugene asked 32 college students to learn a list of pairs of
unrelated words, such as "ordeal" and "roach." The students were
presented with one of the words, then were asked to say the
paired word or avoid thinking about it.
The subjects could recall more easily the paired word that they
were asked to remember than the one they were asked not to think
about.
"These findings thus support a supression mechanism that pushes
unwanted memories out of awareness, as posited by Freud," the
researchers wrote in the March 15 issue of Nature.
In an article accompanying the research, Martin A. Conway of the
University of Bristol in England said the findings lend "support
to Freud's original definition of repression; it unambiguously
shows the existence of consciously initiated ... inhibition of
memory.
"Even in the innocuous setting of the laboratory, and with
stimuli as trivial as randomly paired words, powerful inhibition
can be evoked. How much stronger must this inhibition be for
objects central to our thoughts and emotions?" Conway wrote.

CloudRider note: This topic is central to a range of issues, from
"UFO abductions" to alleged (perceived) "mind control"

should be of more than passing interest to serious researchers
into these phenomena, as broadly defined. "True Believers" will
no doubt be unaffected, but nevertheless the dialogue will be
altered by this research and the provocative conclusions its
authors draw.
This material may also be of interest to therapists exploring
"past life regression" and other so-called New Age paradigms,
"paranormal" activity and transpersonal psychology, as anytime we
uncover more "brain-mind" mysteries, everything past is altered
and everything we believed we knew must be suspect. THAT IS
SCIENCE!

topic and its impacts will be appreciated.
