Chelsea Had 23 Secret Service Agents Protecting Her
Most Americans were shocked to learn this week that 21-year-old
private citizen Chelsea Clinton still has a full contingent of
taxpayer funded bodyguards, with multiple reports that at least
six Secret Service agents now attend to her every security need.
But back when she was still a sitting president's daughter, the
Stanford University senior's Secret Service contingent was
actually far larger, approaching the size of a small army.
"At Stanford, the curtain around the first daughter was drawn
ever more tightly," reported Christopher Andersen in his 1999
Clinton biography "Bill and Hillary: The Marriage."
"No fewer than twenty-three Secret Service agents, most of them
chosen for their youthful appearance so they could blend in with
the Stanford student body, zealously guarded Chelsea's privacy."
When the first daughter spent her spring vacation in tony Aspen,
Colo., this year, all six of her government supplied bodyguards
were put up at condos that cost $300 to $500 a night, reported
the New York Post Friday.
Assuming the agents buddied up in three condos for a week at an
average cost of $400 nightly per condo, Chelsea's excellent Aspen
adventure cost $8400 for Secret Service accommodations alone.
But that's a bargain compared to what a similar skiing spree for
the first daughter would have cost last year.
With all twenty-three agents in tow, a week's worth of Secret
Service accommodations would have run $33,600.
Even without pricey ski vacations, at an average annual salary of
$70,000 per bodyguard, protecting Chelsea Clinton at Stanford
cost taxpayers over $1.6 million last year.
Young Clinton's Secret Service protection will continue, as per
a last minute executive order signed by her dad, until she
graduates college -- supposedly later this year.
But with Chelsea regularly interrupting her academic pursuits to
travel with her mom or spend time at the White House, some
suggest the ex-first daughter's graduation day is still a long
way off.
