By any reasonable reading of their own data, the Miami Herald and USA
Today should have reported that based on "clear-intent-of-the-voter"
standards, Al Gore won the Florida election by 299 votes. If more liberal
standards were used, Gore's margin rose to 393. Instead, the two
newspapers adopted a contorted reading of their own findings -- deleting
the extra votes Gore got in three counties and part of a fourth -- to
fashion a lead making George W. Bush the winner, again.

The bizarre logic applied by the two newspapers naturally has flown over
the heads of the crack national press corps, which simply parrotted the
press releases about Bush's victory. The editors at the two newspapers
also might have felt that no good would come from writing a story that
revealed Gore to be the legitimate winner, since the stock market's in
trouble and there's a crisis with China.
