SF Mayor Follows in Jesse Jackson's Footsteps

"San Francisco's flamboyant Democratic mayor, Willie Brown, announced that
one of his chief political fund-raisers has given birth to his daughter.
Mr. Brown, 66, is married and already has three grown children and two
grandchildren. The baby, Sidney Minetta Brown, was born Sunday to mayoral
fund-raiser Carolyn Carpeneti, 38."

Toward a More Color-Blind Society

"Civil rights provocateur Ward Connerly will announce today his effort to
secure a ballot measure that would prevent California public agencies,
including colleges and universities, from collecting data on race and
ethnicity. ... Mr. Connerly's group, the American Civil Rights Coalition,
will begin this month to solicit 700,000 signatures from registered voters
in order to put the new measure on a March 2002 ballot. The coalition noted
the heavy focus on race in the 2000 census, which many saw as intrusive, as
proof that U.S. governments have become too race-conscious."

Size Doesn't Matter

Why Don't Republicans Speak, Act Like This?

"Strange as it sounds, George W. Bush could learn a thing or two about
education and government spending from Minnesota's
professional-wrestler-turned-Governor, Jesse 'The Governing Body' Ventura.
After two years of pulling his punches, Mr. Ventura's second two-year budget
calls for a hefty $1 billion tax cut and holds spending to a 5% increase. He
has also body-slammed the biggest myth of state spending: that more money
equals better education. He calls the education bureaucracy a 'black hole'
that consumes 44% of the state's expenditures. 'For them no amount of money
would be enough,' he laments.

"The Governor has even challenged school districts that have sent groups of
students to the state capitol on school days to lobby for more spending. He
says it's time for Education Minnesota, the behemoth union, created by a
merger of the state's two teachers unions, to stop 'using kids as political
pawns.' He also argues that educators should be reclassified as 'essential
state employees' and thereby lose their ability to legally strike."

GOP Behind the 108-Ball in Battle for Senate Control

"Republicans will probably need to win at least a Democratic-held seat or
two in order to retain control of the Senate in the 108th Congress, and they
think they've found an incumbent they can take out in Louisiana Sen. Mary
Landrieu. But in reality, Landrieu is a good example of the problems Senate
Republicans are facing heading into the next election. For if the Louisiana
freshman is the weakest Democratic link, then the Republicans could have
trouble knocking off even a single Senator in 2002."

Rosie's Gun Poll Backfires

"Talk show host and anti-gun activist Rosie O'Donnell is conducting a poll
on gun control at her online magazine 'Rosie.' Given her views, she may wish
she hadn't. Among respondents, 82 percent say, 'I think everyone has a right
to own a gun with no restrictions.' Only 2 percent say, 'I'm for gun
control.' A combined 13 percent support private ownership if licensing or
point-of-sale background checks are in place. The site doesn't say how many
people have participated in the poll but the percentages are probably giving
the Koosh-loving host heartburn."
