Pardon Probers Grill Roger Clinton Accuser as Allegations Widen
Lawyers from the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee spent
Thursday afternoon in a federal penitentiary interviewing a man whose
family claims they paid $235,000 to former first half-brother Roger
Clinton in exchange for the promise of presidential clemency.
Meanwhile, the New York radio talkers who broke the Roger Clinton
scandal wide open in February detailed new allegations that had the
Clinton sibling running a veritable presidential pardon auction staged
at a Dallas hotel in 1998.
"This afternoon at two o'clock the majority and minority counsels for
the Dan Burton committee met with Garland Lincecum at his Texas prison,
videotaping his testimony to be presented to the committee," reported
WABC talk radio host Paul Alexander.
Alexander, along with his WABC partner John Batchelor, first reported
in late February the story that now has commentators openly speculating
about whether the ex-President's half-brother may soon be indicted.
Appearing on WABC's Sean Hannity Show, Batchelor and Alexander said that
Burton committee lawyers were scheduled to interview Garland's mother
Alberta and brother Guy on Friday, to review their account of the
pardons-for-cash scandal.
After stonewalling repeated attempts by congressional investigators to
get him to answer a series of written questions, Roger was subpoenaed
late last month by a criminal grand jury convened to probe Pardongate by
U.S. Attorney for New York's Southern District Mary Jo White.
After several postponements, the Clinton sibling is scheduled to appear
on April 27 -- two months to the day after the radio duo's first report.
Roger's lawyer, Bart Williams, has been hinting he'll invoke his Fifth
Amendment right against self incrimination.
And in a new development which could widen the scandal considerably,
Batchelor and Alexander revealed that Lincecum may not be the only
victim of the clemency-for-cash swindle allegedly perpetrated by Roger
and two business partners.
In fact, if the new information is accurate, the Clinton relative may
have staged a veritable presidential pardon auction at a Dallas hotel in
the fall of 1998.
"(Roger) flew to Dallas-Fort Worth and staid near Love Field at an
Embassy Suites hotel for several days," Batchelor said. "This was a job
mart for the grifters.... And the job mart was interviewing several
ex-cons, all of whom wanted pardons. Lincecum is only one of them."
"We're prepared today to say there was more than one person besides
Garland Lincecum involved in trying to buy a pardon who met with Roger,"
Alexander said.
The radio team revealed that as the investigation heats up, more
witnesses have come forward seeking immunity from prosecution.
"Everybody's nervous enough now they've started calling up prosecutors
to say, 'Do you want to hear my story,'" said Batchelor.
"The gang itself is getting ahead of investigators -- that's how bad it
is," he added.
Some of the new information being provided could raise questions about
whether President Clinton knew what his brother was doing.
"There's now allegations that they were playing games with the Customs
Department and diplomatic passports," revealed Batchelor.
"The investigation is going to open like the branches of a tree," he
added. "I'd be surprised if any indictment didn't go much farther than
just Roger Clinton."
