Dems Protest Scalia Fla. Visit

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Justice Antonin Scalia, in South Florida
Tuesday to speak at a dinner hosted by a Catholic lawyers group, drew
Democratic protesters angry over Supreme Court's rulings during the
presidential election dispute.

About 75 people, some holding signs that read ''Never Forget Selection
2000'' and ''Injustice Scalia'' gathered outside the hotel where Scalia was
speaking before a gathering of judges, elected officials and lawyers
attending the 12th annual St. Thomas More Society of South Florida dinner.

The protesters marched in front of the hotel, chanting ''We Will Remember''
and ''No Justice, No Peace.''

Scalia spoke for 30 minutes, focusing on religion and history, and did not
touch on the election or the protesters, whose number had dwindled to about
a dozen by the time he delivered his address.

''We're not protesting Scalia individually. What we are protesting is the
decision by the Supreme Court,'' said Mitch Ceasar, Broward County
Democratic Party chairman. ''We obviously feel that the court
disenfranchised people who did go out to vote.''

Scalia, one of the most conservative members of the Supreme Court, voted
with the majority in the court's 5-4 decision that halted a manual recount
sought by then-Vice President Al Gore of undervotes cast in the presidential
election.

''He certainly had a tremendous influence over the Supreme Court ... he
should have never been involved,'' said 48-year-old Joanna Rohrback.

The court's decision cemented George W. Bush's position as winner of the
presidential contest.

George LeMieux, chairman of the Republican Party of Broward County, said it
was ''outrageous'' for Democrats to protest a Supreme Court justice.

''The strategy of the Democratic Party leaders is to keep their rank and
file members enraged with this concept that they really won the election and
that it was taken from them so they can use that hatred to keep these people
motivated for the next election,'' LeMieux said.
