Former Attorney General Janet Reno says she's considering
running for Florida governor in 2002.
Reno mulls run for Florida governor
Former attorney general says environment a key concern

MIAMI, May 18 - Former Attorney General Janet Reno said
Friday that she is seriously considering running for governor
next year, which could pit her against Gov. Jeb Bush, the
president's brother. Reno, 62, in a telephone interview from
her Miami-area home, said she will probably decide whether to
run by the end of the year.
'People have continued to talk to me about it and I have told
them I would consider it.'

Former U.S. attorney general "I HAVE to decide what
can I do that would best serve the interest of Florida," Reno
said. "I want to talk about the vision I have of what the
state should be. Maybe there are other people out there who
could address that better than I can, but let's see."
She said she has been approached by Democratic
officials who want her to run. "People have continued to talk
to me about it and I have told them I would consider it," she
said.
Reno was elected Miami-Dade County's state attorney
five times before serving as attorney general under former
President Clinton. She said she didn't know how much money she
would have to raise to mount a viable campaign, but said it
would be in the millions.
"I think it would be very expensive," she said.
Reno indicated that environmental concerns would play a
role in her decision whether to run for governor.
"There are so many beautiful rivers and streams that we
must protect in our marvelous Everglades. I love this state. I
want to do what's best for it and that's what I would
consider," Reno said.
BUSH V. RENO IN 2002?
Bush, who took office in January 1999, has said he
plans to announce next month whether he will seek re-election
next year.

"If I make up my mind to run, and let me be clear
about this, I love my job and I think I've got the best job in
the world, it won't be about the other person. It will be
about my record and what my intentions are, should I want to
run again for the next four years," Bush said Friday.
The governor and other Florida officials were in the
spotlight during last fall's marathon presidential election
battle. Bush's brother, George W. Bush, won the state's key 25
electoral votes and the White House when the U.S. Supreme
Court stopped the Florida recount sought by Democratic
candidate Al Gore.
The first female attorney general in U.S. history, Reno
was surrounded by controversy for virtually her entire tenure
but stayed nearly eight years in office - longer than any
attorney general in the 20th century.
She had a sometimes chilly relationship with a White
House that thought she ordered too many independent counsel
investigations of Clinton and top administration officials.
She also was the target of persistent criticism from
Republicans who thought she should have sought the appointment
of an independent counsel to investigate allegations of
Clinton-Gore fund-raising violations.
LONG-SERVING ATTORNEY GENERAL
Still, Reno served longer than all but one of the 77
other attorneys general - William Wert, in office for nearly
12 years ending in 1829.
Reno acknowledged that her role overseeing the deadly
siege of the Branch Davidian complex in Waco, Texas, and the
seizure of Elian Gonzalez could be issues in a campaign. But
she said she stands by her actions in both cases, noting an
investigation by former GOP Sen. John Danforth that cleared
her of any wrongdoing at Waco.
"He said I could not have walked away after four
(federal) agents were killed and 16 were injured" in the raid
that preceded the siege, Reno said.
CUBAN-AMERICAN OPPOSITION
Many in Miami's Cuban-American community were furious
when Reno used federal agents to remove 6-year-old Elian from
his Miami relatives' home so he could return to Cuba with his
father last year.
Elian had been found floating on an inner tube off Fort
Lauderdale in 1999, after his mother and 10 other Cubans
drowned while trying reach Florida in a small boat.
Lance deHaven-Smith, a Florida State University
political science professor, said Reno would get few votes in
Miami's Cuban community. But state Democratic Party Chairman
Bob Poe said most Cubans wouldn't likely vote for his party's
nominee anyway, whoever it is.
Jose Basulto, president of the Cuban-exile group
Brothers to the Rescue, said he would oppose Reno not only
because of Elian, but because she refused to indict Fidel
Castro after Cuban planes shot down two of his group's planes
over international waters in 1996
"Janet Reno, to me, is another criminal," he said.
A FORMIDABLE CANDIDATE
Reno has had Parkinson's disease since 1995, but she
said it didn't affect her performance as attorney general and
it wouldn't affect her performance as governor.
"It would make my hand shake, that's all," she said.
She said she frequently kayaks and engages in other outdoor
activities without adverse effects.
Reno is personally opposed to the death penalty, but
said she could carry it out if she was governor. As attorney
general, Reno approved seeking the death penalty against
Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh and others.
"If the death penalty was legally applied, I would seek
it and sign the death warrant," she said.
DeHaven-Smith said Reno would be a formidable candidate
in the Democratic primary and the general election.
He said she would have a huge advantage in name
recognition over state House Democratic leader Lois Frankel,
who is also considering a gubernatorial bid. Frankel did not
immediately return a call Friday seeking comment.
David Johnson, executive director of the Florida
Republican Party, said the GOP would welcome a large
Democratic primary because it would drain the winning
candidate of resources for the general election.
"Our thought process is pretty much this: 'Come get
some,"' Johnson said.

report.
