Pentagon Wants To Develop 'Mini-Nukes'

Experts in the US have advocated resumption of nuclear tests, if necessary,
to build `mini-nukes' wanted by Pentagon, a media report said here on
Saturday.

"Some experts are advocating the development of new types of warheads, even
if that might require a resumption of nuclear testing.

The Pentagon is particularly interested in creating 'mini-nukes' with
relatively small explosive yields," it said.

These could be used to destroy underground command bunkers without causing
large numbers of casualties, the Washington Post reported.

President George W Bush's recent remarks about a new "composition" and
"character" for the nuclear stockpile referred to requirements for new types
of warheads, former head of Defence Intelligence Agency General (Retd)
William Odom was quoted as saying by the Post.

"We absolutely need new ones. You want to keep a nuclear weapons development
programme, get rid of old big ones, and have the flexibility to investigate
new ones," he said.

Former President Bill Clinton said the moratorium on nuclear testing he
announced before the US signed the CTBT would remain, and so far US has
honoured that.
