Governor of Arkansas - About Win Roc…</A>

Biography
Win Rockefeller, son of the late Governor Winthrop Rockefeller and grandson
of the late John D. Rockefeller, Jr., was born in September 1948. He attended
Pembroke College at the University of Oxford and is a graduate of the ranch
management program at Texas Christian University. Rockefeller is the father
of eight children. He and his wife, Lisenne, maintain homes at Winrock Farms,
in Conway County, and in Little Rock.

Rockefeller was elected lieutenant governor of Arkansas in November 1996 in a
special election when Mike Huckabee assumed the office of governor after
Governor Jim Guy Tucker’s resignation on July 15, 1996. Rockefeller was
elected for a full four-year term in November 1998 after receiving 67% of the
votes cast.

As Arkansas' lieutenant governor, Rockefeller serves as the president of the
Arkansas Senate and as a goodwill ambassador for Arkansas across the state
and nation. He champions the issues of economic development and education. In
1997, he created Books in the Attic, a program using existing resources and
volunteers to ensure access to reading opportunities for all children.

Long before his election to public office, Rockefeller has been active in
public service. He is the immediate past president of the Quapaw Area Council
of the Boy Scouts of America and currently serves on the Boy Scouts National
Board of Directors. He served from 1981-1995 on the Arkansas State Police
Commission. In 1991, he was appointed by President George Bush to serve on
the President’s Council on Rural America and was elected chairman. He has
served on numerous boards, including the Arkansas Nature Conservancy, the
Arkansas Cancer Research Center, and the Arkansas Arts Center Foundation. He
is the founder and chairman of the board of the International Billfish
Conservation Foundation.

In addition to his public service, Rockefeller serves as chief executive of
Winrock Farms, Inc. and has interests in various small businesses around the
state in the areas of retailing, automobiles, farming and the resort
industry. He is active member of the National Federation of Independent
Business.
Beliefs
I believe in the supreme worth of the individual and in his right to life,
liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
I believe that every right implies a responsibility, every opportunity an
obligation, every possession a duty.
I believe that the law was made for man and not man for the law; that
government is the servant of the people and not their master.
I believe in the dignity of labor, whether with head or hand, that the world
owes no person a living but that it owes every person an opportunity to make
a living.
I believe that thrift is essential to well-ordered living and that economy is
a prime requisite of a sound financial structure, whether in government,
business, or personal affairs.
I believe that truth and justice are fundamental to an enduring social order.
I believe in the sacredness of a promise, that a person's word should be as
good as his or her bond; that character--not wealth, or power, or
position--is of supreme worth.
I believe that the rendering of useful service is the common duty of
humanity, and that only in the purifying fire of sacrifice is the dross of
selfishness consumed, and the greatness of the human soul set free.
I believe in an all-wise and all-loving God, named by whatever name. That the
individual's highest fulfillment, greatest happiness, and widest usefulness
are to be found in living in harmony with His will.
I believe that love is the greatest thing in the world; that it alone can
triumph over hate; that right can and will triumph over might.
John D. Rockefeller, Jr.
