SEN. Hillary Clinton seemed annoyed yesterday when asked about the
impending sale on eBay of her Wellesley College thesis, a document which
shows just how far left she was in 1969.
"I don't care one way or the other," Clinton told The Post about the
auction. "I don't know anything about it . . . [I] can't be worried
about something like that."
She needn't be worried. The copy of her bachelor of arts thesis on 1960s
radical Saul Alinsky is basically worthless because the original can be
read for free in Wellesley College's library.
Los Angeles-based GOP political consultant Joe Giardiello has started
the bidding at $40,000, but no one is biting. An earlier offer of
$50,000 fell through when the buyer said he couldn't pay.
Sexgate provocateur Lucianne Goldberg said she was interested in
Clinton's thesis only if it were the original, which it isn't.
"The provenance is so vague," Goldberg says.
The other problem is federal copyright law. "If they could assure us
that in buying it we owned the content, then we'd pay the price they're
asking, but only under those terms." she said.
Goldberg thought she could recoup some of the purchase price by
syndicating the thesis in a series, "if it was legal to do so."
But, like other potential buyers, Goldberg was unaware that Wellesley,
which sealed the thesis in 1992 when she became first lady, unsealed the
paper when she left the White House in January. Anyone can go to
Wellesley and read Hillary's idealistic paean to progressive action.
Wellesley rep Arlie Corday told PAGE SIX's Jared Paul Stern, "The
original is still in the college's archives." Corday said Wellesley
theses are "copyrighted materials" and can only be reproduced in part
according to fair use provisions.
Goldberg says the thesis is valuable because it would be "very
informative to show how far left Hillary was in those days, from her own
hand in her own words.
Alinsky was a known lefty, if not a an outright Communist. I think it
would be illuminating for the voters of New York to know where her
politics lay."
Giardiello says the copy being offered for sale was anonymously mailed
to the Rick Lazio campaign two days before the New York Senate election
last year, but Lazio's former aides say it didn't come from them because
they never had it in the first place.
In response to a query on Goldberg's website, Giardiello stated, "We
knew the [Lazio] campaign was going to deny it. It was mailed two days
before the election to my friend in the research department. They really
couldn't do anything with it and I'm not sure he told anyone he got it.
There's not much you can do with it two days before the election."
