My email address is: Saturday, 9 June 2001 10:09 (ET) Russian firm picked to ship U.S. plane from China WASHINGTON, June 9 (UPI) -- The Pentagon has awarded a Russian company the contract for transporting a U.S. surveillance plane from the Chinese island where it has been stranded since a collision in April, Russia's Itar-Tass news agency reported Saturday. A spokesman for the Polyot (Flight) company, Leonid Shirobokov, was quoted as saying that it had won the tender submitted to the U.S. military for the operation. The work will involve cutting the Navy's hobbled EP-3 aircraft into four pieces and loading them onto a Russian-made Antonov-124 one of the world's biggest cargo planes, at 226 feet (68 meters) in length. A four-member U.S. team is already on Hainan Island, southwest of the mainland China, to begin preparations for the work, which will begin sometime next week and is expected to take about a month, a Pentagon spokesman said Thursday. Shirobokov told Itar-Tass that Polyot has a fleet of seven An-124-100 planes, known by the model name Ruslan, but did not specify how many would be dispatched to transport the dismantled U.S. plane. The Pentagon estimates that two An-124s would be needed for the job. The EP-3 has been stranded at a military air strip on the island since it collided with a Chinese military jet on April 1. The crash killed the Chinese pilot and forced the U.S. plane and its 24-member crew to make an emergency landing. The crew was detained by Chinese authorities for 11 days. Each side blames the other for the collision, and Beijing demanded - and received - an official apology from Washington. China refused to allow American specialists onto Hainan to repair the plane and enable it to fly home, adding to the strain in the countries' relations stemming from the collision.
