I got a look at Hillary's mysterious thesis yesterday at Wellesley. It
was reportedly sealed when Bill Clinton became president. Since then, I
have heard bits and pieces about it, but not enough to satisfy my
curiosity. Yesterday, I read that someone was auctionong a copy on
e-bay, but Hillary had it pulled. Then a spokesperson for Hillary said
it wasn't about money, anybody can read it for free at Wellesley!

Oh Really? That's news to me. Let's check up on that right now. I called
Wellesley and sure enough, they said --come on down! They were a bit
nosy though asking for my name and address, etc over the phone, "in case
we need to contact you about anything." I confess I briefly envisioned a
hit squad being dispatched at that moment--"Local Resident Commits
Suicide."

Wellesley was having a reunion and the campus was pretty busy, it took a
while to get a permit and park.By the time I got in there, I had
two-and-a-half hours to look it over before closing. The thesis is kept
in the archive dept.at the campus library on the fourth floor. They buzz
you in and buzz you out. I had to fill out and sign a form with name and
address and my purpose (personal research). They had some rules on it
about copyright, etc. I checked a box that said NOT to let anyone else
know I looked at this. But I doubt they honor that. After all, this is
the queen of FBI files. Now she knows who I am and where I live. (That
might not be my real name and address Hillary, I might have switched the
charts).

The two women librarians seated me right there in front of their
suspicious gazes. I had hoped to make a digital voice recording of what
I was reading, not a chance, I wasn't even going to ask. I'm glad I left
the digital camera in the car. It was uncomfortable sitting there
without any privacy. I had a legal pad on a clip-board with two pens. I
was told to use a pencil that was on the table instead in case I
accidentally make a mark.

I waited, and then she brought it out, reverently holding the
"manuscript" like it was a holy book. It was in a hard black binder
(that still had the price tag inside, $9.50 I believe) It was 80 or so
pages long. I figured I had time to skim through it and see enough to
know if this warrants further investigation.

The pages were xeroxes of a sloppily typed thesis, with corrections and
handwritten notes here and there. (This web report is sloppy too, I
admit, but that's different)

Hillary Rodham
Political Science
2 May, 1969

It said something like the thesis was to fulfill partial requirements
for a Batchelors Degree.

On one of the first pages was a poem called "East Coker" by T.S. Eliot.
The poem had a sentence underlined by Hillary that said, "There is only
the fight to recover what has been lost and found and lost again and
again." (What was lost Hillary, the divine right of kings?)

Hillary used that sentence from the poem in her title.

"There is only the fight..."
An analysis of the Alinsky model

Regarding her paper, Hillary wrote although she doesn't have a loving
wife to thank, there are 3 people she said deserves special
appreciation:
(Was that a snide remark ala her "baking cookies" smear of traditional
gender roles, or was that just a lighthearted joke?) "Mr. Alinsky for
providing a topic, sharing his time and offering me a job; Miss Alona E.
Evans for her thoughtful questioning and careful editing, Jan Krigbaum
for her spirited intellectual companionship and typewriter rescue work.
"(This wasn't typed well at all)

It was initialed "hdr," I looked it up later and her middle name is
"Diane."

Here are the chapters:

I. Saul David Alinsky: An American Radical
II. The Alinsky Method of Organizing: Three Case Studies (14)
III. "A Prize Piece Of Political Pornography" (44)
IV. Perspectives on Alinsky and his Model (53)
V.Realizing life After Birth (68)
Appendices (76)
 Bibliography (84)

Let me say right here, there are no smoking guns in this thing. There is
barely any "Hillary opinion" to analyze. You are forced to read between
the lines. Of course, just the subject matter speaks volumes. She wrote
it straight like a reporter just focusing on what Saul Alinsky says and
does, or what others say about him.

My impression though is that Hillary studied and admired the man, but
after learning enough about him, found him wanting. She took inspiration
from him, but learned his local methods were a dead end. A professor in
the Dept. of Sociology, AnneMarie Shimony seemed to have turned her off
to Alinsky's organizing methods, telling Hillary that two of Alinsky's
touted achievements were actually failures.Hillary later mentions that
professor in her list of primary sources saying "Mrs. Shimony criticized
Alinsky's method during our conversation in March, 1969, helping me to
focus my own opinions." Also very telling is her comment where she lists
Alinsky among her primary sources:

"Mr. Alinsky and I met twice during October in Boston and during January
at Wellesley. Both times he was generous with ideas and interest. His
offer of a place in the new Institute was tempting but after spending a
year trying to make sense out of his inconsistency, I need three years
of legal rigor."

Hillary mentions Alinsky's "Fourth of July rhetoric" about Americans.
That to me was another subtle hint of her mindset. She points out his
localness and almost "bootstrap" prescriptions for the poor. She
demonstrates how the Alinsky model on organizing neighborhods no longer
fits because American life is not centered on the neighborhood anymore.A
national model was the future., which she says he was realizing.

Hillary also goes heavily into Alinsky's critique about the war on
poverty (Political Pornography)This may be why she wanted the book
sealed. For instance, in the context of Alinsky's warning to the poor to
beware of poverty programs that only attack their economic poverty,
Hillary wrote in her own words, "Welfare programs since the New Deal
have neither redeveloped poverty areas nor even catalyzed the poor into
helping themselves. A cycle of dependency has been created which
ensnares its victims into resignation and apathy."I could not tell if
Hillary was stating her own opinion or paraphrasing Alinsky's opinion. I
decided it was the latter.

Another excerpt that leapt off the pages for me and I noted down was
from an article about Alinsky published in the Economist titled "Plato
Of The Barricades" published on May 13-19, 1967 (page 14).

"His charm lies in his ability to commit himself completely in the room
with him. In a shrewd though subtle way, he often manipulates them while
speaking directly to their experience. Still he is a man totally at ease
with himself, mainly because he loves his work which always seems to be
changing--new communities, new contests, new fights."

That description of Saul Alinsky fits Bill Clinton! I thought I had a
great scoop.Hillary was looking for a Saul Alinsky type to latch onto
and found him in Bill Clinton. After I got home, I wanted to post about
this, but figured others may have already written about the thesis. All I
found was a column by Barbara Olson, who I was astonished to find also
noticed the same parallel with Bill Clinton! No scoop though, but I saw
it independently and put it here as re-emphasis.I also noticed that
Olson didn't find much more to report about the thesis. She has a copy in
her posession.

Hillary included an application to Alinsky's well funded (Midas
Corp.)Industrial Areas Foundation Training Institute for organizers
along with a fact sheet and letter to Hillary from Alinsky.

Hillary also listed Nicholas Von Hoffman as a source. "One of the best
of Alinsky's organizers and now a superb writer for the Washington Post.
I talked with him by telephone in Washington in October. He was both
helpful and provocative."

I can go back if anyone is interested and make detailed outlines of the
chapters, but there really isn't much there. I think Hillary simply
wanted to hide her idol's politically embarrassing views about the
welfare state.
