Funny, I think the parents might be hiding something...time will tell.

Missing intern's parents think Condit is hiding something

Friday, June 15, 2001

By DAVID WHITNEY

The parents of missing intern Chandra Levy said Thursday that they suspect
Rep. Gary Condit knows more than he has said about her disappearance, and
they urged him to come forward with the information.

In an interview with MSNBC, Susan and Robert Levy said that more information
will be coming out about the relationship of their daughter to the Ceres
Democrat. They also said that they think it's possible Condit knows where
their daughter is.

Later, however, Susan Levy said she may have come off as accusatory when she
didn't mean to.

"I haven't accused the congressman of anything," she said. "Everybody is
thinking I'm making accusations, but I haven't."

Mike Lynch, the congressman's press aide, said there is nothing more Condit
could say because he's told police all he knows. He also said that the Levys'
comments are the understandable feelings of distraught parents.

"He's told the police everything about this," Lynch said of Condit. "Our
hearts and prayers go out to the Levys. They are going through an experience
you can't even imagine. It is the worst conceivable circumstance that could
happen to anybody."

Late Thursday afternoon, the Metropolitan Washington Police Department
repeated what has become a daily litany: They had no new information on
Chandra's disappearance to report.

The case was being treated as a missing person's case, said Officer Tony
O'Leary. "There is no evidence it should be a criminal case," he said.

Chandra Levy, 24, who had been working as an intern at the Federal Bureau of
Prisons, was last seen April 30 at a Washington sports club. The following
day, she sent an e-mail to her parents in Modesto telling them about her
plans to return to California where she was about to be awarded a graduate
degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She has not
been heard from since.

Condit, a 53-year-old seven-term congressman, has been drawn into the case
because Chandra Levy had struck up a relationship with him after visiting his
office. The nature of that relationship hasn't been firmly established,
although Condit has repeatedly insisted it was not romantic.

In the interview with MSNBC, however, Sandra Levy said she had had a
conversation with her daughter about Condit, but she declined to give any
details other than to say "more information will be coming."

The Washington Post has reported that Chandra Levy had been to Condit's
apartment in Washington's Adams Morgan neighborhood, and stayed overnight.
Condit has strenuously denied that, and demanded a retraction from the
newspaper, which it has refused to do.

About the time of her disappearance, Condit's wife, Carolyn, was staying with
the congressman in the unit, Lynch said Thursday. As far as he knows, the two
women never met, Lynch said.

Lynch said Mrs. Condit arrived in Washington April 28 in order to attend a
Congressional Wives Club luncheon with First Lady Laura Bush, and she flew
back to California on May 3.

Condit's lawyer this week has lashed out at what he describes as a "media
circus" in the coverage of his linkage to Levy's disappearance.
