A friend of mine also ditched his cell-phones a few years ago, for the same
reason. He opted instead to subscribe to a national emergency service
(about $80 a year). The yearly fee includes a phone to *use* (and all
accessories, i.e., batteries, 12 volt and AC rechargers, etc.). It has 2
buttons on it; on/off, and one that only dials 911 (it has the same amount
of buttons as any phone, but only two work. It is meant to always be left
in your car (or any car you may be in), and used for emergencies only.
There is no additional cost to dial the nearest 911 to your current
location, no matter how many times you might want to do so. It knows where
you are and where to dial.

Great idea, huh?!?

Btw, he says they are increasing sales by several hundred percent a year
(good stock purchase??), and he's been using it for a few years now.
Sorry, tho, as I can't remember the name of the company, but it is
something like National Emergency Phone Service???
