Dixon had started to follow through on his retirement plans. He was drafting stories based on cases he'd worked during his 41-year career, family members said. But those stories will be left unfinished. Mr. Dixon, 65, who also served with the Dallas Police Department, died early Thursday at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas of complications from Devic syndrome, a disease similar to multiple sclerosis, said his son, Doug Dixon. Services will at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Restland Memorial Chapel. A viewing is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Restland Funeral Home. Doug Dixon said his father was the quintessential police officer. "It was his whole life," said Mr. Dixon, who added that his father would be buried in his University Park chief's uniform. "He loved Dallas. He loved University Park. And he loved being a policeman." Robert Dixon retired from University Park in January 2000. He was hired by the city in 1985, the year he retired from the Dallas department. "He did a wonderful job and served our community well," said University Park Mayor Harold Peek. "He always conducted himself with the highest ethical principles and integrity. He was a good man." Mr. Dixon started in Dallas in 1958 as a patrol officer. He earned a bachelor's degree in law enforcement/police science in 1972 from Sam Houston State University and a master's in liberal arts in 1977 from Southern Methodist University. One of his first beats was to patrol portions of Oak Cliff. In 1963, he was assigned to the security detail at Market Center the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. His regular beat was the evening relief for Officer J.D. Tippit, who was shot that day by Lee Harvey Oswald. Mr. Dixon told The Dallas Morning News in 1999 that he worked his regular shift that evening, thinking that was the best way he could help in the tragic situation. He was promoted to detective, lieutenant and captain. He served as director of internal affairs and eventually was named deputy chief, serving in the central patrol and criminal investigations divisions. The former chief said he had worked many cases, but the ones in University Park during recent years that were especially shocking. They included a murder-for-hire scheme and the slaying of a University Park mother in front of her three children. Retired Dallas Capt. Doyle Tolleson said he and Mr. Dixon became friends while working in internal affairs. "The main thing was that he tried to treat everybody fairly," Mr. Tolleson said. In addition to his son, Mr. Dixon is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy Dixon of Rowlett; grandchildren Michelle Schupbach, Aaron Dixon and Andy Dixon; two great-granddaughters, Taylor Schupbach and Breayna Schupbach, both of Mesquite; and a sister, Shirley Perkins of Linden, Texas. Members of the University Park Police Department will serve as pallbearers, and the Dallas Police Department will provide an honor guard, Mr. Dixon said. www.ctrl.org DECLARATION & DISCLAIMER ========== CTRL is a discussion & informational exchange list.
