[It might be interesting to check the phone records to see if Joyce Chang
had called the "mysterious number" before her disappearance, or if Condit
had called her. And, remember that "Noose Tightens..." article (excerpt
below) as you're reading the following Bee article. The woman provided The
Bee with two of the numbers that she said Condit gave her about five years
ago; messages left at those numbers were not returned. --MS]

Excerpt from "The Noose Tightens..." :

"3) Which brings us to the case of Joyce Chang. You may recall that in May,
when Chandra's disappearance first made the news, there were stories about
Chang's disappearance from the same neighborhood two years ago. Her brother
led a candle light vigil for his late sister, whose body was found months
after her disappearance floating in the Potomac River. No one has ever been
arrested in this case."

"A 31-year-old woman, who grew up in the valley and formerly worked for two
California congressional offices, told The Bee over the course of several
interviews that she, too, had been given special phone numbers. This woman,
speaking on condition of anonymity, recalled how Condit "continued to flirt
with me and basically proposition me" over the course of several weeks."

"He has this mysterious phone number that he gives out to all the girls,"
the woman said, speaking before Zamsky's and Smith's accounts became
public. "When you call this number you just hear music playing and then a
beep. That is when you are supposed to leave a message."

Authorities search Condit's home in D.C.

By MICHAEL DOYLE
BEE WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON -- Police following Chandra Levy's trail searched Gary Condit's
condominium Tuesday and early today, and want him to undergo a lie-detector
test and take a sample of his DNA.

Investigators announced the three approaches Tuesday, while insisting that
Condit is not a suspect in Levy's disappearance.

"I think it's time that once and for all we find out exactly where we are
in this case," Police Chief Charles Ramsey told reporters late Tuesday
afternoon. "We need to have some finality."

The Police Department's moves come after Condit admitted, according to
widespread reports that neither Condit nor his attorneys have disputed
lately, to having an affair with the 24-year-old Levy. The Modesto woman
disappeared more than 11 weeks ago, after completing an internship at the
U.S. Bureau of Prisons.

Local television stations showed police officers entering Condit's
apartment through the back door at about 11:30 p.m. EDT. Police left a
little before 3 a.m.

Executive Assistant Police Chief Terrance Gainer said he did not know
whether Condit was present when the search began. Asked if police intended
to do the entire search at one time, the official said: "At the moment,
that's what they've agreed to."

As early as today, the U.S. attorney's office in Washington hopes to
interview a flight attendant who claims that she and Condit had an affair
and that he asked her to lie about it.

And as police probe Condit's behavior, a San Joaquin Valley woman has told
The Bee about encounters that she says she had with Condit -- encounters
that bear notable similarities to reports about Condit's alleged dealings
with the missing intern and the flight attendant.

Condit's attorney, Abbe Lowell, broached the idea of having the congressman
voluntarily submit to police searches, and even a lie-detector test, in a
Monday news conference.

Lowell's point was that Condit would fully cooperate with police and that a
separate call for a lie-detector test by the Levy family's Washington
attorney was unnecessary.

No subpoenas or warrants

The Police Department quickly accepted Lowell's idea, meaning that there
was no need for police to obtain subpoenas or search warrants.

"I think it's a good idea, since he raised the issue," Ramsey said, adding,
"that's not saying he's a suspect, and that's not saying we expect to find
something."

Lowell was in New York City handling another case Tuesday, and Condit
continued his long public silence. But his public relations consultant,
Marina Ein, indicated a willingness to work out the details with police.

"What you're looking for could involve blood, hair, telltale signs of a
struggle," said Gainer, Washington's second-ranking police official.

"Why else do you think we'd search?"

He said authorities would conduct an "open-ended search," and probably
would use a chemical and ultraviolet light process that allows blood to be
seen even on surfaces that have been cleaned or painted.

Police say they have no evidence of foul play, and still classify the
investigation as a missing person case.

Washington police want FBI agents to conduct the polygraph exam, asking
Condit about the details of his relationship with Levy, the last time he
saw her, and what he knew of her state of mind.

Those same questions were answered during a third, 90-minute police
interview with Condit on Friday, but police acknowledge frustration at how
long it took Condit to reveal the full scope of his relationship.

For 10 weeks, Condit's staff denied that there was a romantic relationship.

"We had three interviews to date," Ramsey said after a significant pause,
when asked to assess Condit's cooperation. "That's how many interviews it's
taken to get us to this point."

Levy's father, oncologist Robert Levy, told reporters in Modesto on Tuesday
that the truth "is hard to expect" from Condit, and that the search would
have been better conducted 10 weeks ago.

In a case that has spun off from the Levy investigation, representatives of
the U.S. attorney's office will interview flight attendant Anne Marie Smith
about her claims that Condit called her repeatedly in urging her to falsely
deny a 10-month affair.

"We're voluntarily appearing," Smith's attorney, Jim Robinson, said Tuesday
morning.

Monday, Robinson told Fox News that Condit's behavior near the end of the
relationship with Smith had begun to frighten her. "She was very afraid for
her life at this point," he said.

Special phone numbers

Smith and Levy have described -- Smith to investigators, and Levy to her
aunt -- how they arranged liaisons with Condit through phone methods
designed to preserve his security.

"I asked her, 'How do you get in touch with him if it's so secretive?'"
Levy's aunt, Linda Zamsky, recalled. "And she said . she would dial a
number, it would play music, and she would leave a message."

A 31-year-old woman, who grew up in the valley and formerly worked for two
California congressional offices, told The Bee over the course of several
interviews that she, too, had been given special phone numbers. This woman,
speaking on condition of anonymity, recalled how Condit "continued to flirt
with me and basically proposition me" over the course of several weeks.

"He has this mysterious phone number that he gives out to all the girls,"
the woman said, speaking before Zamsky's and Smith's accounts became
public. "When you call this number you just hear music playing and then a
beep. . That is when you are supposed to leave a message."

The woman provided The Bee with two of the numbers that she said Condit
gave her about five years ago; messages left at those numbers were not
returned.

Ein, Condit's new spokeswoman, said questions about Condit's private life
had no bearing on the search for Levy.

"The congressman's private life is his private life, and he's entitled to
(it)," Ein said.
